I currently am on Orange but recently it keeps disconnecting-forums seem to imply they are having problems in the evenings maintaining connections-anyone use Sky and if so any problems?

depends on what you want to spend?
had orange t'internet put on at dads a few weeks ago, hardly use it, just drop my laptop in to download stuff, 8meg there, only get 1meg here,
but for £15 inc line rental!! was paying £11 just for line there with bt,
and he can ring my mobile for nowt anytime and any other landline.....(if they get round to sorting the free 2nd line)
    bargain!
my ex has sky bb, 40gb limit deal but she dont do much on it, but never had problems with it and my laptop works fine there too

    Re: pipex

a colleague has the vodafone broadband package and experiences the same problems you describe and (I think) the same applies to Orange because they do not yet have the capacity for the bandwidth they are offering - something about needing more users before they will/can make the investment

another colleague uses pipex and reckons its the business, cheap and good service provision but the downside is that you have to buy your modem whereas others provide it 'free'

    hope this helps

do you lose synch when the connection drops?

If so, nothing to do with Freeserve (orange). They will need to raise it to BT for you though .. (unless you've been LLU'd then it might be different).

    synch

on your modem/router you will have a light that is labelled as synch/link/dsl or showtime. Find this, and it should be on when you are online. When your connection drops, just check to see if this light is flashing.

If it does flash, the problem isn't down to contention (as suggested in previous posts) but a fault on the line that Orange need to raise to BTWholesale.

If the synch light remains solid, it could be BT but I'm more inclined to think this is a fault with either Freeserve or your equipment.

    RE: synch

it goes out then starts flashing-bt say they can't check the connection-orange wouldn't until I'd done all sorts like plugging the router into the main socket-i haven't done it yet cos its a right pain to move the pc-if i move provider would it cure such a fault-or is it a generic fault on the line?

    RE: synch

BT Retail (150) won't sort it for you.
You need to report it to Orange who will report it to BTWholesale for you.

However, you will need to try it in your master socket with nothing else plugged in.
You might find it's a dodgy cable or filter causing the problem. Make sure all filters are checked and all phones (including sky boxes) have filters too.

The fault (if it's what I think it is and if you are not LLU'd -- find out from Orange) will transfer with you to your next ISP.

How long does it go out for? Are we talking seconds or minutes or hours?

oh and do you use a router? What sort is it?

Coz if you use ethernet or wireless, you don't need to move the pc to the master socket.

You will if you use usb though.

its genarally minutes rather than hours-it then lasts for 1- 15 miutes before disconnecting again-on average that is-and it is worse in the evenings! how much are your consultancy fees by the way :)

    This sounds like my problem

I'm with Talktalk broadband and the connection is brilliant morning and afternoon but ***** in the evening. One connection drop after another and numerous attempts to get back on line.

Ps. Been like it since I was LLU'd last december.

RE: oh and do you use a router? What sort is it?

From my experience, this is probably a line fault, but like I said earlier could be your equipment. Best to be sure as it will save so much time.

Take the router down to the master socket, unplug everything else and leave the router and one filter plugged in (master socket, filter, then router). And then watch for the light to flash. If the light remains solid, you've got a line/extention problem.

If the light continues to flash, see if you can borrow a modem or try your modem on another DSL line.

This may seem mad but I've seen Televisions, central heating systems, chritmas tree lights and garden lights interfear with the sygnal and cause problems. I don't think yours is anything like this, but just check if anything comes on when the connection goes down.

ps .. sorry for the late reply, in a moment of irony my laptop lost it's connection to the internet.
