We're moving house, currently I have TV through Sky and broadband/phone through Virgin Media and quite satisfied with that set up in terms of reliability and what we get, but cost wise it's not the best. Where we are moving also has VM, but I'm pretty much settled on getting Sky again for the TV - so it's down to the broadband - is anyone on here on the Sky fibre broadband and if so how good is it for reliability and download speeds?
I get 29mbs should get 38. Mates got bt and gets 76 down the road. It's very stable though, run my openbox from Ethernet, plus everything else wifi. Can't ever remember it dropping out.
I have sky fibre, getting 40mbs and it's very stable. Been on it a good few months and speed hasn't dropped and very happy with it. The modem isn't the best though so I get a bit less upstairs on the PS4 through wifi, but just signed up for sky q and got a new hub, so see if that helps. Fibre seems expensive, but I need a fast reliable connection and it fits the bill for me. Cable isn't an option so it's fibre to copper from the box which is maybe quarter of a mile away at the end of the street.
Tempted by Sky Q but it ramps the cost up. It's a case of do I get better for about what I'm paying now, or cut costs but get similar!
Sky q for me anyway is only 1.50 per month more cos you lose the multi room cost. It's the cost of the boxes etc where they make the cash this time. Gets installed 8th March so will know if it's worth it then!
Remember Virgin Media are about to boost up their speeds. I'm currently on 100mb but it's being upgraded to 150mb by the end of June.
depends what you have now and what you want. As an example, I have everything except movies now and also have multi room. If you want the sky q silver box which has all the extra features and 12 tuners, then it's £12 extra pm, less sky multi room which is 10.50 ish? I end up paying 1.50 pm more. The box comes with 1 sky q hub so you can watch in another room and 2tb storage and costs £99 plus whatever you get its £50 installation. So, £149 up front plus an extra monthly cost. All depends what you have now. Also, you don't own the boxes (like virgin) you effectively lease them, so sky will repair / replace them if they break down. Appreciate sky is expensive before all the "you must be mad" brigade pipe up, but it's all about choice. If you don't want it, don't friggin buy it.
Re: Speed ... do you really need it. Don't let the speed con you into paying more. VM might be putting speeds up, but an extra 50mbit or whatever when you're above 100 anyway isn't going to make a big difference (unless you download the internet every day or have a house full of peope/devices downloading at the same time). Those down the road may also get more than you, but that could be for a number of reasons. The first being wifi/ethernet. You will get better performance out of a cable than thin air (wifi). Second is the location of the green cab, but that's not really relevant here.
I have had in my present home EE and BT, changed to BT simply because they gave me a better package money wise. I never had any troubles with EE (orange) and I have not had any troubles with BT so far.
Re: I have had in my present home Also re speed, baring a **** up by the ISP in question, or a fault your speeds will be the same whoever you are with (with the exception of VM who have their own network and potentially LLU suppliers such as sky/taltalk ... even then though, you'll not notice much difference). This is basically because you're on an BTOpenreach/Wholesale re-sold platform.
Re: I have had in my present home I'm getting Virgin next Thursday at my new place in Harrogate. Would have rather stayed with BT but there is no Superfast here so I'm not going backwards. Chose the 100mb package. Didn't think 200 was necessary but it's an option should I choose to upgrade
