There now, slightly inadvertently, but very glad I am. Must be the most overlooked city destination in Europe. It has a reputation for being dull and grey but is absolutely stunning. Loads of amazing architecture, dripping in political history, and extremely reasonably priced. Wizz Air fly there very cheaply from Doncaster, and it's in the green zone. Seriously recommended.
I got the 5hits for a week after I'd been there. The only good point was that it started after I'd got off the plane at Manchester otherwise I'd have flown home sat on the plane bog. God I was in a bad way.
Any ideas what might have caused your unfortunate situation, just so that I can avoid whatever it was?!
A packed lunch from the hotel I think. They probably threw any old crap on it; or they deliberately adulterated it?
Went a few years ago and properly loved it. Great city. Decent food as well (if you avoid the packed lunches apparently). Ceausescu’s palace of parliament is worth a look. Oddly they seem to be massive fans of Michael Jackson - there’s even a little shrine in one of the parks.
I've been a few times as it's the easiest way to get to north east Bulgaria. Had a great time every time.
That's actually where we've just come from! Only considered Bucharest after the price of the flights from Sofia to England went through the roof and we started looking for alternatives.
I saw the Michael Jackson thing on the map, but wasn't sure it was really worth visiting! Doing Ceaucescu house and government buildings tomorrow, as they need to be booked a day in advance. Unfortunately all the art galleries are also shut on Tuesdays, so today's likely to be spent walking around and drinking Romanian craft beer (which is surprisingly excellent!).
Have they finished the cathedersl yet? Apparently it is quite controvertial; spunking millions on it instead of basic infrastructure.
