Not doing half bad eh? 4th in the premier league. Wonder how many of their fans in the 70s 80s and 90s settled for mediocrity and dare not to dream. Wonderful stuff.
Think what Burnley did right was get to a position where they were doing well and upped the investment at the right time, we've been in a similar position maybe twice over the last 7/8 years but we've just caved in and said we can't afford to keep our players.
Made up for Burnley but some clubs go the other way as well ... Tranmere never made Premier League but were a decent side. Look where they are .. Charlton, Blackburn , Portsmouth ... I'm sure there must be about 40-50 clubs who would have taken what we've achieved in the 40 years I've supported Barnsley
Charlton, Blackburn and Portsmouth all had extended stays in the PL and the latter two won a league title and an FA cup. Neither are comparable to us.
Burnley backed by 2 large owners well run off and on the pitch. Bob Lord was infamous owner in glory days of 60s an 70s. put in his own money. At Championship level need more than 1 backer in most cases. Respect Mr Crynne and Hecky for what they have done for the club they will be hurting like all fans and players just now Blackpool have had a roller coaster ride recently and yes well done Burnley but hard to compare football clubs we are where we are and a couple of results can change the mood.
Add Wigan to that list too. I wonder how many fans of clubs like Accrington, Mansfield or Exeter have often thought 'oo i wish we were like Barnsley'? I've never looked at another club and thought I wish we were where they are: i wish we were there. Anyway the point was about positivity, not about how we are doing right now.
The post is not a reflection of how we are doing now. It's about believing things can change. Here's always hoping.
Yep. We could be Burnley or we could be Tranmere. Best thing to do is not to dream, not to have any hopes or expectations and just settle.
Now look at them. I'm basing it on the fact that during my time supporting Barnsley those clubs have been in and around same league as us. I can remember Ewood with 6 thousand in an old rundown ground. Difference was only Jack Walker who brought money into the game for the first time.
All football fans dream of the big times for their club. They all want to be in the Premier League and face Barcelona in the Champions League .... however you have to be realistic. I dream of marrying Kaley Couco ....
Coventry - they must be the most mismanaged club of the last 20 years. They were a well established Premier League club when we got up back in 1997 they had their own ground, they were solvent (as far as I know) and had a solid fan-base. Since then they've sold the ground and now play in a huge empty copy-cat stadium which is owned by the council, the fan-base has dwindled away. I used to work for Jaguar and knew several workmates who were season ticket holders, NONE of them still go. I don't want Barnsley to end up like that.
Burnley could be playing in the champions league next season, just like the mighty leicester did the other year. Not fantastical is it?
Fòr every coventry there is a leicester, burnley etc. If barnsley exceed expectations then why would one immediately assume that it would go tits up? The aforementioned clubs were mismanaged. Loads of clubs aren't. So you and others are making the conclusion that we would naturally be mismanaged too. No real basis for argument there.
Are we alone as supporters in always fearing the worst? There is no way we could be a Burnley, Swansea or Watford, but we are one misfortune away from being the next Blackburn or Coventry. Bit strange really.
I find tbe defeatism and lack of ambition perplexing. A large percentage of our fan base seem happy to mediocre forever. Happy to play in the Billy Bob Thornton Happy Custard Division 4 as long as we exist and don’t turn out like Blackburn or Wigan. They perpetuate the myth of #TeamsLikeBarnsley with a differential happy to make the numbers up but can’t compete attitude. If footballs about anything it’s about dreams. We seem to have lost interest in ours.
