JACOB BUTTERFIELD has got the key to the dressing room door at Barnsley as the club's youngest-ever captain.
Aged just 21, the former Manchester United youth prospect insists he can handle the pressure for Keith Hill's Championship side.

The midfielder is dreaming of reaching the Premier League and setting up a reunion with former United team-mates Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.

Butterfield said: "It's impressive to be skipper of a Championship side at 21.

"Being made captain came out of the blue. The boss wanted me to have that extra responsibility and I think I have responded well. I'm focused on what's best for the team.

"I was born into football as I arrived at the start of the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

"I was at Man United's academy until I was 15. I played with Welbeck, while Cleverley is a year older. The United lads give me inspiration."

Butterfield, set to face Leeds today, is in the final year of his Barnsley contract and has been offered a new deal.

But he is keeping his options open, with an eye on moving to a top-flight club. He said: "Every player wants to play in the Premier League. and I am no different."

Big test of where we are - this, for me.

Some will say "there's nothing you can do if he wants to leave". Others will say "we should make him an offer that entices him to stay". Fact is, if he goes to the Prem he'll not be captain anywhere and probably won't be a regular starter. Hammill has made two appearances in the Prem this season, with three more as sub.

Whether you believe its Butts' fault or the club's if he goes, the end result is the same. We remain a nursery club whose progress will always be limited by our willingness to flog our assets.

That's why I'm currently underwhelmed - even by the matchday price concessions!

He's a very naive lad, so can imagine his head could be easily turned. You've only to check out who he follows on twitter and the majority are 'glamour models'
Everyone knows, you should set up a second dummy account for things like that ;) Unless he uses the 'Do you know who I am' chat up line.
He doesn't appear to have 'banter' with the other lads either. I think he'll be off come Jan.

He isn't the clubs youngest ever captain. Dunno where that comes from to be honest.

No, hill is creating, HAS created, a team ethic which doesn't rely on an individual. It sounds like he's not going to sign a new contract until his agent has hawked him around the lower reaches of the prem. It would be a real waste for him to go now as he's still learning and disapearing into the reserves of a lower prem side might put money in his bank account but it will set his progress back years.

In my opinion RNL is a bigger talent. Let's just hope his injury hasn't disturbed his progress.

I don't think we will struggle. Not like we are a one man team relying on Brian Howard's goals a few years ago or when Diego Maradona won Napoli the title on his own.

    Quality player

    Plenty of potential.

Needs to consider under which manager he's developed the most and be wary of any hype from 'advisors'.

Cases in point: Mr B Howard. Mr D Nardiello.

Plenty more cases than just Bri and Nards. The list of players in our near 125 year history who have left us for a so called bigger club and actually made it there to justify the move is very small.

to be fair everyone thought we wouldn't be able to replace hammill, and we have. same thing goes for any of our better players, theres always someone that will come along and fill their place.

I think that Hammill was the greater talent and young Jacob has still to show consistency of performance over, say, half a season in order to convince the scouts. If he does leave in January, I can see it being for a fee no more than a million and possibly less. Whilst his agent has been touting Everton, Fulham and the likes, the more realistic offers would probably come from Championship sides. If he goes for free in the summer to a Premiership, or good Championship side, I don't think his is a name we will hear any more, other than some loans out to league one, or two, followed by free transfer at the end of, say, a two-year contract. The best deal for club and player would be a new contract, but with the dreaded get-out clause - it really should be a million this time, or have we learned nothing from Hammill??

I don't think he will leave for free in the summer. Because of his age we will get compensation for him provided we have offered him a new contract on better terms than he was on, which we have. How much that compensation will be is unknown but given he is our captain and playing regularly in the Championship, putting in some quality performances, scoring goals, being picked for u21, surely it won't be an insignificant sum. So we don't have to sell in January for a small amount, I would be looking for a million, if a few clubs are after him we might get a bit more. If we get offered a million we should take it and use it to get Drinkwater in permanently. Maybe have some left to bring another player in, the way Hill's signings have worked I trust that he can replace players.

End of the Pikey game, he skied that free kick, and the final whistle blew. But while 10 other tarn players hugged, celebrated and fist-pumped, wonderboy stood hands on hips for over ten seconds staring into space. It was like he was thinking "Kinel... if that had gone in, the interest in me would have grown, just like Mr Agent told me.."
I think thats why he keeps trying to do everything himself, or shooting on sight. And lets be fair, if he was 'all that', he would have buried at least one of the 5 shots he had in that game..
I actually want him to set the division alight until January so we get decent recompense when he DEFINITELY leaves.
Reuben, Digby, Clark and Rose are on their way up, with Matty Done at 23 already there.. oh, and Goran!
    **** Jacob, Jacob who? ;)

    Some quality mind reading there

Perhaps he's very professional and demands high standards of himself so was disappointed in what he'd done and was reflecting on that ?

Nah, let's have an unjustified dig at one of our most creative players.

Bit harsh that Whitey. I would much prefer him to sign another contract with us, he is an important player for us, and get Drinkwater in but I can't see that being possible on our budget. You sound like you don't rate him. I certainly do. If he had a 3 year contract he would be worth 3 million right now.
