From Sky Sports: Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield is considering making a U-turn and signing a new deal with the club, snubbing North East duo Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. The 22-year-old missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, but he is now nearing full fitness and is considering his options. Butterfield, who was called into the England Under 21 squad last season, is out of contract at Oakwell and had looked set to depart the Championship club. Newcastle were leading the chase to land him and North East rivals Middlesbrough were also keen, but now the player is considering staying put. It is believed Butterfield has been impressed by manager Keith Hill's plans for the new season, which have seen him pull of a significant coup with the signing of Egyptian striker Mido.
In other words Newcastle have realised they can sign better players and Middlesbrough are no better than us.
Thought that he might be tempted to stay with the players Hill has been bringing in. I for on hope he signs a new contract here
Please.... i can't take any more possible good news this week!!! We need to sign Humphrey Arbuckle from a Rochdale feeder club for some normality to kick back in. Mellis.... Mido ... and maybe Butterfield... crikey thats looking a decent side all of a sudden.
Would be great as long as he didn't perform like Colace after a U-turn. Taking a step back, this is a nothing story to fill the news. No quotes and is just something to say. If he re-signs, bingo, Sky will say they said so first
More likely his agent having one last attempt at attracting some better offers whilst also preparing the safety net of our contract offer being kept on table.
I've always wondered if a club would take such a gamble on a player who hasnt kicked a ball after such a serious injury. It's conceivable surely that he might not be the same player he was? And lets be right, he's only had one half decent season in his career so far.
Exactly. It would also be a nightmare for us if he did sign and he actually wasn't good anymore, considering the wage packet we're offering
As somebody who ruptured a knee ligament (although it was about 15 yrs ago now), the thing he'll struggle with most is confidence as to whether it might go again. He's more likely to do his other one than the same one again. It shouldn't affect pace, it shouldn't affect his touch, he shouldn't even affect his twisting and turning when in possession. The acid test will be how he deals with a rough challenge and if he keeps putting himself in the same position to receive the ball. I think he'll do just fine.
Personally I would let him go now we have Mellis. Similar player who is yet to reach his potential, admittedly he wasn't brilliant when he came on loan, but he showed flashes of what hes capable of. Could be worth more than Butterfield if hill gets the best out of him. You don't get signed by Chelsea for nothing.
If he signs a new contract, it doesn't really matter what the real reasons are behind it, our fans will believe what they want to. I hope he does re-sign, and I sincerely hope he's better than what Colace was after he did something similar a few years ago.
I can just imagine it now Butterfield: hey don I've seen all these players your bringing in and I want to stay Don: you can **** off your going, how do you think we have financed them
I hope he does stay, and would he actually be performing a "u-turn"? As I didn't think he'd ever actually said he was leaving. But if he does then I hope the club have a decent contract set up because at what stage would he be eligible to go for nothing rathe than us being able to get money from a tribunal due to his age?
