His career would nose dive and it wouldn't be long before he was playing in league one after being left in the wilderness for a couple of years because he is not good enough YET to play for a premiership club. When things are going his way he is excellent but when they're not then he is awful as was the case yesterday and on a few other occasions too. He needs to stay at Barnsley for another year to learn how to deal with that and to drastically improve on his defensive abilities. Do that and in the summer of 2013 the world will be his oyster.

I have the feeling that he will be going in January though.

Think finances (both his and the clubs) will dictate this move.

He isn't yet consistently good at Championship level, so how anyone thinks he is ready for the Premiership is beyond me.

Although he has some quality about him, I'm not convinced he has the athletic ability to ever make it in the top flight. You can't learn pace...

I would be amazed if a premier club signed him.Nowhere near premiership quality. Look to Keith Andrews and ask why he plays in the Championship. If Butts goes it is with my best wishes in the knowledge that our manager can do an awful lot with the money it would generate

If any Premier team are to invest in Butterfield (or any other player for that matter) they need to watch themover a minimum 20 game period.
On his day Jacob is a great player, but the consistency over a 20 game run is not there yet...............last few games have proven it.

Thought yesterday he was poor and should have done the simple things at 2-0 up ie. win ball and keep posession rather than looking for 20 yard pass or pin-point defence splitting through ball.

Suggest he stays at REDS and works on consistency and also the "bread & butter" part of his game.

Butterfield isn't good enough to play in the premier league.

He's had 12/15 good games for us

I'm starting to think he'd be daft to stay

Why play for a club where he isn't appreciated when he could play somewhere whose fans actually support him.

Don't need pace when you,ve got butter fields passing ability I can think of quite a few centr midfielders in premiership who have no pace, not saying he's good enough yet though!

Re: I'm starting to think he'd be daft to stay

Have to agree with you Jay.

He's a young kid carrying the midfield, being asked to be captain and in the time i've supported the Reds (mid 80's) I've not seen a player with the technical ability he has. He can do things no other player at the club can do. His touch is incredible and has a lot of strength (shielding the ball from Bowyer like that isn't easy) He's nowhere near the finished article but the kid has quality.

I've been disappointed how he vanishes in games when things aren't going well, but to be fair, he's not the sort of player to grab the game, he's a playmaker who is best with the ball at his feet.

I thought he'd be here for another season but I think January will be the time. Put him in a better midfield and I think he may well develop even more than staying here longer.

While a agree with Jay, he is only a young lad he is the most naturally gifted player at the club and has immense potential but I also agree with other posters that he isn't ready for the premier league yet. I hope we can keep him, I dont think we will, because I think Keef can develop him into a very good player capable of getting into a top half premier league side.

Well if I were him I'd **** off

Not for footballing reasons but for his own sanity and well being.

Captain of a Championship club at 21, in the England U21 squad. His club which has historically struggled recently, he's personally in good form and the team is exceeding expectations thus far and what's he get ? On the whole ill informed, ill judged rants and personal criticism. Some will say that he's a professional footballer and he should expect it, fair enough if he was playing w@nk and abusing the fans, but ffs.

On a purely footballing level I think he should stay and develop under the current managment regime who have brought him on this season. But I can fully understand why he'd do one.

The main reason he's attracted criticism

is that he's quite clearly keeping his options open hoping for a move. If he'd signed the contract we've allegedly offered, there would be less flak Im sure. But on top of giving it "Im ambitious and think I can play at a higher level" he's put in 3 or 4 back to back below par performances. His form has dipped at the time when the headlines were all about him, yet Saturday aside, we've still won games, suggesting that its down to team performances not individuals.

In the cold light of day he's had a decent half season and Id be happy to see him sign the contract that has been offered in the knowledge he's young and improving. And I'd also not be too surprised to see him dropped for the next game as a reminder its not all about Jacob Butterfield.

    Is his hair ?

In the current context I don't blame him for seeing what's available.

I think we have a manager who can 'manage' so his loss won't be as noticeable as Hammill for example, and as I've said I'd like him to stay, and think it'd be best for his career if he did. But while ever the LGBT's community Twitter accounts are getting 'hacked' and personal abuse spews forth, the chances of Butters stopping recede daily.

So far, Hills signings have proved mostly astute

so I agree, if Butterfield goes then Im less worried than I would be under the previous manager that we'll be able to recruit a creative midfield replacement. I suspect the best we can hope for is he insists upon a clause in his contract that will allow him to talk to clubs who offer a certain fee (ie the standard Barnsley FC contract) and I can understand the club refusing and trying to cash in. Either way, he'll need to up his game cos the last few performances havent been anywhere near good enough.

These last few games when Butterfield hasn't been anyway near good enough

Is this the Ipswich game where he put in a corner for Vaz Te to nod home and sent a perfectly weighted through ball for Drinkwater to win the penalty.

And the Palace game where his pass put in Vaz Te down the left for the opener, then hit a shot from the edge of the area which the keeper couldn't hold for Vaz Te to get his second.

And the Peterborough game when he scored a screamer from 25 yards then played the perfect ball for Davies to rifle in the 4th.

And the Leeds game where again he hit a shot the keeper couldn't handle allowing Davies to poke it home.

Last 4 games 1 goal and 6 assists. Nowhere near good enough? He's involved in just about every goal we score. Davies and Vaz Te wouldn't have anywhere near the amount of gaols they've scored if it wasn't for Butterfield. I don't know what people want.

I'd like Andranik Teymourian back, the only professional footballer that I could outpace.

I don't think anyone is questioning butterfields ability to create a goal or chance its the other parts of his game they are questioning.

    Correct

However, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
