im after a white highland terrier pup (bitch) and i hav'nt got a clue where to start looking. is there shops that sell puppies? looked in chronicle but that proved unsuccesful. thankyou for any help
If you want a pure breed then you will probably have to look for breeders/stud kennels. Otherwise ring round kennels such as: Cliffe Kennels at Hoylandswaine RSPCA at Bawtry Barnsley Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) Royston Animal Welfare. Phone numbers should be in the local phone book/yellow pages.
Or - you could take my advice: I've fashioned my own dog from papier mache. Pro's: Never needs feeding, doesn't leave it's mess anywhere, I don't have to hoover up it's hair every day, it's not going to die just as I start getting used to it, it was cheap, I don't have to walk it & it does what I say. Con's: I can't enter it in Crufts.
Phone Kennel Club if interested in rescuing a dog. They'll have details of specific breed rescues through UK. Or try, www.epupz.co.uk or .com. not sure which. But they have many dogs on there of different breeds.
if you go to your local vet he will probably advize a lot of vets do keep breeder lists and will help you, also try dropping it in google see what comes up.
Try Dog lovers Club http://www.dogregclub.co.uk Same dog, just £100 cheaper than kennel club. Unless you want to breed or are a snob.
Anyone who used to go to Broadway!! They're all dogs and effeminate like your little Highland White!! Eyup E.I. :-D
RE: here is a web site .... www.epupz.co.uk ..... loadsa westies there cheers everyone. resitering with epupz now
RE: for a pedigree Westie... You need a proper registered breeder. The best way is search through websites, using google. You could start with kennel club. If you are hoping to get this sorted by Christmas, I wouldn't hold to a deadline. A good breeder is cautious about people buying for the Christmas market and also likes to have some idea of the sort of home the dog will have - sounds a bit odd, but that's the way they think and they are professional carers of dogs. A breeder will have various breeding seasons and you may have to wait for the next litter to arrive. A lot of good breeders deliberately avoid the Christmas market for obvious reasons. Westies are pretty popular as a breed and so there should be a good breeder nearby. I would go and have a look at the conditions in which the dogs are kept and be very suspicious if they say they don't take visitors. I bought a puppy for my wife and daughter some two years ago and we waited sixth months for a breeding cycle and litter, visiting two breeders. Be suspicious in they say they breed another breed, like a St. Bernard, or any of the 'guard dog' types, as they may only breed Westies to fund the other and may not specialise. I considered a Westie, but they are quite independent in mind and we went for a Cavalier King Charles, which go down as probably the most affectionate of small dogs - the worst that can happen is you get licked to death! Sorry if I sound like a doggie anorak, but I went through the same two years ago and thought you might benefit from the experience. Happy hunting!
You need a reputable breeder Your local Veterinary practice should be able to put you in contact with any reputable breeders, or the Kennel Club. If you do purchase one I would recommend that you insure it as they are notorious for skin complaints that require lifelong treatment.
