Keir Starmer must be livid that Lammy and Phillips are both taking money from whoever will give it given his ‘pledge’ to ban 2nd jobs…

No allegation of illegality against Yvette Cooper or Dan Jarvis, and I have to say my impression is that they would rank highly amongst MP's in terms of integrity. Nonetheless, it would be good to hear a proper explanation of these donations, and that shouldn't be a problem if everything is above board.

As an aside, I read that at one stage during his selection contest for Barnsley Central, Major Dan was trailing to that towering intellectual Richard Burgon. Which is a reminder that no matter how bad things are................! :D

The indication of illegality isn’t the point Sam and his team are making. It’s a system that exists where you can follow the rules but still hide the source of your funding in mystery. Do you have a dodgy looking house as the headquarters of a business.

You have a Labour leader saying no 2nd jobs and shadow cabinet members taking literally hundreds of second jobs.

It all feeds into the narrative they are all the same.

I went to the Labour hustings where Cooper stood, in a professional capacity, and she was absolutely appalling. Poorly prepared. Without ideas. I was very surprised as she is generally switched on and on the ball. She would have deservedly lost to almost anyone. Not sure if the nerves got to her but in that hustings she blew it so that was on her. As for Dan I’m unconvinced by him. Burgos isn’t my cup of tea but he stands for something. I’ve really no idea what Jarvis stands for other than taking money from opaque sources which though I’m assuming completely innocent (I think you can find the company in companies house) doesn’t look great.

I looked up my MP - John Healey - and he earned a massive £400 from Ipsos Mori. Although he did get a ~£15k donation from the Pallias Foundation - which appears to be an American "charity" working in "National Security"...

None of them should get any donations or second income. All donations should be through an independent body that vets the donor before passing the donation to the party only.

I met him once and he seemed both approachable and friendly and he has done some work to help reduce the crime rate in the area (lots of "visiting" car thefts at one point). There isn't enough detail about the donations to determine if it was something legitimate or not - it could have been travel and hotel for a multi-national security conference somewhere (which is kind of justifiable as Shadow Defence Sec), or it could have been a back-hander.

But there is far too much dodgy looking donations. I don't know if you saw the Sam Coates piece this morning but he went to one of the big Tory party donors and it was just an empty building...

interesting one for Starmer. Wants to imprison the Just Stop Oil types. But happy to take money from their main funder.

Yes I saw that though the house that the company that gives money to Cooper is registered to us again well dodgy.

Like you I doubt that John H has strayed from his legal obligations but it’s all too murky. 2nd jobs should be banned all individual donations to fund specific visits etc should go through an independent auditors and be donated to the relevant political party. If it’s a visit and speech that should reflect the actual costs.

If all this type of funding is banned though I think there's a case that MP's salaries should be doubled. 84k in no way reflects the responsibility and the high profile nature of the job (when done properly). Then it's up to us to pay it.

A basic MPS salary should be tied to Average U.K. wages and be a multiplier of that. 3x seems about right. They should move parliament up north for cheaper running costs. Build a hotel that MPs could stay in FOC whenever parliament was sitting. They should only be allowed to claim minimal expenses like you or I can with meals supplied in the hotel, all staffing should come from a central pool of civil servants not the family member or dog. All the free/cheap bars be to be closed. They should get the same holiday allowance as most of us 20-25 days plus bank holidays.

All MPs should provide regular detailed information on what work they have done. How much they have done on constituency work etc.

The current system doesn’t attract the best. The current tory party tells you that. It attracts the worst. Labour have only a tiny percentage of people who have sone real jobs in the real world and you end up with career politicians like Wes Streeting who has never done a real days work in his life.

We need to make politics a role that is accessible to all not a small elite. It needs to be seen as public service role not a gravy train for corruption.

Politicians need to understand the real world and real life consequences if their actions.

The vast majority of them don’t care if the NHS is **** they don’t use it. They don’t care if pensions are **** they never rely on SRP. They don’t care if schools are **** they don’t send their kids there. They don’t care if we can’t see a GP cos £200 quid get them in straight away. We don’t need to pay them more we need to know that they are doing the job for the right reasons and keep them financially in a Sphere where real life impacts them. If that means we have to have a PM who hasn’t been to Eton well what a shame.

Oh and make all voting electronic. Virtual attendance should be fine. Then they could actually do constituency work.
