I think last night was the biggest indicator yet of what he wants from the team and us fans backing them all the way..... Young and fearless with ability and confidence... The fans were terrific last night and showed that yes we do have an element of idiot but when we all get together and back the team we can roar them on to performances like that.... Oakwell should be rocking like that every week it does make a difference......
I wasn't there last night as I'm on my hols but you're absolutely spot on. When I first started going in the late 80's, anything above 6500 was considered to be a very decent crowd. But we not only roared the lads on, but made it so intimidating for the opposition as well, ina ground that held over 35,000 . Although it's definitely been a factor, I don't buy it that the ground being all seater is the main reason why the atmosphere is more often than not like a morgue.
It was the best it's been for a long time last night..... I've missed 3 home games since 1998 and that atmosphere at times was up there with the best I've witnessed. You could feel the crowd all around the ground willing the players on and them responding with attacks and last ditch defending that in turn fuelled the crowd even more. The young lads at the back get some bad press (rightly so at times) but last night everyone seemed to come together to support barnsley and that's how it should be every home game. We can't expect to get out of this division playing in front of 8000 fans sitting quiet moaning about the scoreboard or because the sauce has run out were there to support barnsley and the best way to do that is to get behind them and spur them on. We've got our part to play lifting the negativity and nervousness that goes with it and just getting behind the team from the first whistle to the last. They are young and will make mistakes but we know that. Look at them down the road with 20 odd thousand a week jeering every time it's not running smoothly phoning radio Sheffield complaining it's pathetic. Look at crystal palace that place is like a fortress and horrible for away teams with banners and non stop singing and getting behind the team so they can play without fear or negativity and it shows. If we learnt one thing last night it's that when we all pull together oakwell is the best place in the world win lose or draw so let's have some more of it......
