FFS........Just come home !!! It's obvious that you miss the place like hell As you know I've spoken to you int Old Number 7 pub Forget about the skiing forget about the lovely summers and all that space....just forget about Canada Do what mi brother did after 16 years in Canada.........he came back home Next Christmas be in town for Mad Friday and I will buy you a drink xxx
Aww bless you. I'm intrigued. What did I say? Yes, I do miss certain aspects of England, and Barnsley in particular - it used to be the footy, but I'm not so sure any more!!. I do the miss the pubs too - but mainly the pub scene of my youth, not so much nowadays. (And before Fired chirps in, yes I miss family too). Having said that, I AM planning on being back home next Christmas, so I'll take you up on that pint in the Old No.7! Cheers.
The drink is a promise Everything being equal (never knew what that meant).............I will buy you a drink, in fact more than one, if we meet for a chat on Mad Friday next year
What one thing did you miss most about England when you left Calgary? I'm seriously thinking of moving to Canada, and know we have offices in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. I've been to Toronto and Vancouver but fancy Toronto, I love the place. I called in at Calgary on the train but don't remember it much. But missing Oakwell on a Saturday is something I don't want. Very sad u know.
Family is the obvious thing, followed by Oakwell and British pubs (but even that has changed a lot since we moved almost 13 years ago.) Oh, and proper tea-bags, jaffa cakes and battenburg..... I could go on. Canada has a lot to offer. The standard of living is fantastic - Vancouver and Calgary usually rank in the top 20 places to live in the world (depending on the survey). This is a very multi-cultural country. Canada has weathered the Financial / Economic storm of the past 5 years better than any other G10 country, unemployment is relatively low and Western Canada will have a labour shortage soon due mainly to the oilsands in Alberta. I cannot speak too much about Toronto as I haven't spent any time there recently, but it has major traffic congestion, heat and pollution issues in summertime although winters are much shorter than ours. Depends where you live and work though, I suppose. (Note I may be biased because there is very much a West v East thing going on here!) It is the "soccer capital" of Canada - Toronto has a MLS team with avid followers - due largely to the Italian and Hispanic communities there. Vancouver is a beautiful city...... if you like English weather. I could certainly live there, although the rain would get me down, I think. Calgary - not sure how you went through it on a train? We have very hot and dry summers and very cold and dry winters. In the shadow of the Rocky Mountains - the air and water are as clean as you can get anywhere in the world. It's Cowboy and Oil country; very right-wing politically - there is enormous wealth here (and the problems that can come with it in terms of "haves and have nots"). You can pretty much get whatever job you want. PM me if you want any more info / insight. I'll be happy to help.
................................... Calgary is cheaper to live (house prices etc) more work in Calgary. The tw@t rato is pretty high, only have to drive around for half hour to figure that one out. Have to say though great place to live if you can adjust to the way of life. Like Calgarytyke says any help you need give us a shout.
The biggest thing I miss about England is the price and measures of beer. Apart from Oakwell, family and friends there's little else I miss.
A mate at work has recently moved to Calgary. I'm aiming for Vancouver as that's where my mum and dad will soon be living. But I think getting a transfer to Calgary is more realistic to aim for. I know Toronto well though and it makes getting home cheaper so can do it more often. I'd love to move back to Barnsley but I'd have to commute to Leeds everyday.
