Barnsley’s Callum Styles has already explained his future ambitions as Sunderland weigh up transfer decision

Callum Styles has already admitted he would like to stay at Sunderland longer following his loan spell at the Stadium of Light.

The 24-year-old made 12 Championship appearances during the second half of the 2023/24 season after joining the Black Cats from Barnsley. Sunderland have an option to make the deal permanent but are weighing up their options ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Styles has been named in Hungary’s 26-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, qualifying to play for the country where his mum was born. Marco Rossi's team have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Germany, Scotland and Switzerland, with Styles hoping to add to his 20 international caps.

The 24-year-old was asked about his club and international aspirations during May’s issue of FourFourTwo, including his time at Sunderland. “We’ve gone through two managers this season so it’s been a rocky road,” Styles replied. “But after nine or 10 matches I started to enjoy my time and the supporters are so passionate. It’s a top club.”

Asked about his future and what’s next, he added: “I haven’t really thought about it, as I’ve been focusing on playing. Sunderland have Premier League ambitions so I’d love to stay longer, but there are lots of factors that could result in different scenarios. We’ll see.

“I just want to play some minutes at the Euros. The main aim is to get out of the group, as that’s when the real games start to happen.”

 

No time for him. Publicly wanted away on numerous occasions. He's like a cheating spouse constantly looking for better options.

I wish we had money to fck him off. He'll struggle to get a new club.

 

I think old Callum is a bit above his station.

Sunderland fans dont want him and he hardly pulled up trees in League One.

To be talking about stopping their and premier league ambition.

He should focus on playing a full consistent season of good performances at League One level first.

Struggle to think of a good run of games where you sit back and think hes very good. Odd glimpses.

 

He’s a loser, can’t wait to see the back of him.

 

I may be reading too much into his comments and being overly critical as I too have no time for him, but.....he says he wants to stay at Sunderland as they have PL ambitions, as if he's anywhere near PL ability.
He also disrespects the 3 teams in the Euros group, as the "real" games are in the next round.
Calum, you're potentially playing Germany, god knows how you've stumbled into getting picked for a team at the Euros, but a bit of humility wouldnt go amiss. Definitely his own biggest fan.

They havent got Premier League ambitions if they sign you, Callum lad. They were doing better before you got there.
Deluded.

 

Hopefully he gets his move this summer. I imagine the club would take less than 1 million for him the last thing they want is him back here as I imagine he is a top earner, or another loan with a view to free transfer this time.

He’s the Waitrose Paul Digby for me. Meaning, he values highly, but ain’t that much different to the cheaper Aldi equivalent.

 

I can see this turning into a case like the 2 Belgium lads who we couldn’t get shut off and off wage bill

You would I agree, but I am baffled he gets in Hungary squad to be honest, hope he does well though and gets his move n we get sum brass

 

Seeing him down tools for us and not impress for Millwall or Sunderland, whilst he continually bleats on about his level being the Championship or above, probably has gained him a reputation of having both a dodgy attitude/not the brightest spark.
