Does anyone know anything about SLR cameras? I thinking about upgrading my 'point and click' digital camera with something a bit more fancy and need some advice. I like the look of the Canon 450d with 18-55 lens kit but would welcome any advice that people have if any. Budget is about £550. Ta
Hi, I got a Canon EOS 400D about 18 months ago and I've been well pleased with it. If you want some good advice, take a look at www.dpreview.com as they have some cracking in depth reviews. Have a look at see what you think.
Cannon have a new camera, the 1000D coming out in the next few weeks, boasts that it is going to be the cheapest DSLR on the market. Failing that have a look for a Canon 400D, excellent bit of kit, prices should be done a bit at the moment due to the 450D and the imminent arrival of the 1000D. If you want to avoid the Canons you could try the new Olympus E420 or the Nikon D40x both of which have had decent reviews.
If you want a Canon DSLR Save yourself some moola and get the 350d.
I have one and its really good. From reviews I read its better than the 400d which superceded it, theres a few small reasons why although the 400d is still a great camera. I have no knowledge of the 450d so can't comment.
But the reason I'd go for the 350 is that its cheaper than the others as its older. Unless you're an expert user you probs won't notice any difference anyway.
You'll probs save yourself at least £100, maybe a fair bit more.
Its all about the lenses tho, another reason to go for the older body, You'll get much better pics by investing the savings in a decent quality lens. Pay at least £300 for something decent, the cheaper ones are ****

RE: If you want a Canon DSLR Thing is with the 400d however is the anti-dust system, dust can be a real pain if you swap lenses a lot and as you get more into it you'll want a selection od lenses, without the anti-dust system it could mean having to clean the sensor which is fiddly and can be pricey if you make a ****-up.
I'd stick with Canon or Nikon (I'm a Canon man myself) as they have a much better selection of compatible lenses and accessories than other makes.

Many thanks for all the help. I'm very much a keen amateur so I guess I'd be better going with a cheaper model and invest in a better lens. Thanks again
Keep an eye on places offering camera bundles, i.e camera body, 2 lenses, bag and memory card. You can get quite a big saving as opposed to buying all the components seperately. Currys definately do these sort of offers you can also find plenty in the backs of camera magazines(1 that I've just found www.cameraworld.co.uk). I would recommend the magazine Digital SLR Photography although there are plenty of other good ones available.
