I stopped here with the missus for my 40th:

Great location, nightclub on ground floor of hotel, and a cracking pub called the Hairy Lemon directly across the street. 10 mins walk to Temple Bar.

I've stayed at the Gresham which is central. They had brilliant afternoon teas when I stayed. Made a bit of a glutton of myself tbh.

Bewleys of Balsbridge is just on the outskirts of the centre but within walking distance. Very cheap (€99 per ROOM), very good and perfect location.

Trinity Capital on Pearse Street - very close to everything and not too bad price-wise. Stayed with the girls and with work - good location and nice hotel.

    Royal Dublin on O'Connell Street

Good deals available and not over-pricey. Close to all the action but quiet enough to get a decent night's kip.</p>

First suggestion.... head west (or south)...

If you just stay in Dublin your missing out on the best bits.

Cork (where I am) is a good city, small but with a great
atmosphere. Galway well worth a visit as well. Then along
the West Cork coastline, round the corner and up the West
Coast for unspoilt coastline etc etc

    Regards

The "English market" in Cork looks amazing.

    Had lunch there yesterday...

at the Sandwich Stall (my wife is their bookkeeper, as well as
others on the market)... Also the Farm Gate cafe in the English
Market is a great place for lunch. The food is all from the stalls
in the market itself. Olives, sun dried tomatoes, cheeses, gourmet
sausages, meat, fish, fruit, veg, chocolate, wine... all there.

The whole thing is a foodies idea of heaven.....

Are ye intending to fly and car hire, or drive yourself?

Fly from East Midlands to Cork Airport with RyanAir cheaply.... then
    hire a car (bit pricey)...

From Cork you can do the city itself and then the West Cork coastal
route and on into Kerry... Would guess you could fill a week to a fortnight
    quite easily.

If you ferry then from Barnsley, the Holyhead to Dublin/Dun Laoighrie is
probably the best crossing... but then you'll also have a lot of driving this
side to get away from the East Coast. Also trying to drive/park/use a car
in Dublin is a complete pain.

The tourist board sites would be a good starting point though.
