Ryanair have free flights(excluding tax)at minute just wondered if anybody has been. I know airport is miles away from city, its expensive, it will be baltic in february and dark all day but quite fancy visiting Scandanavia. Any help would be greatly appreciated as always
I was there last June..... Went to Norway last summer for a couple of weeks with my better half and we spent about four or five nights in Oslo (recommend the Best Western Bondenheimen Hotel) before heading over to Bergen and Fjord country. Oslo is an absolutely beautiful city, and I bet it's even more so in the snow! Expensive though. Apparently in the winter months opening hours for most things are limited but you'll still be fine. If you're flying in to Gardermoen Airport there should be an express train every fifteen minutes between the airport and Oslo Central Station. If you decide to go and there's owt else you want to know, you'll have to post it up and I'll look out for it! Hope this helps?
I went on Business in December So to be honest can't you much about where to go or what to do. From what I saw, which was all in darkness as it was dark at 3pm: a. Everything works - even though it had just snowed. b. The city is beautifully laid out, quite small really and worth a look. c. The food is good, but everything is very expensive. Try a walk to the dockside, the old dockyard buildings were converted in the eighties / nineties into little shopping arcades and plentiful restaurants. It looks great. d. Outdoor skating rink should be worth a visit. e. previous post was correct about express trains from the airport. Use them. If you decide to book a cab then use the desk in the airport terminal on your exit that books a cab and confirms a price in advance, rather than just jumping in the nearest cab outside the building - the meter goes up like the second timer on a clock. We learned that after getting stung ourselves.
Weekend break is just about right any more than that and you might start repeating everything as there's not that much there.
I live in Oslo, so I don't really have a tourist's point of view, but if you don't mind it being expensive I think you will like it. They gave the centre of the city a "make over" this summer so it's quite nice here now
Mr & Mrs Fuego can. Went on the Liverpool-Torp flight that you are referring to before Christmas. Also recommend Best Western Bondenheimen Hotel, try looking it up on www.tripadvisor.com, then use their booking engine which searches all of the best known booking sites like www.venere.com & www.hotels.com for the best price. You can get in for about £60-£70 per night usually. Torp bus has a place guaranteed for all Ryanair flights and takes 1hr 45mins, but drops you at the bus station which is central, and less than 10 mins stroll to the hotel mentioned. NB the guaranteed "place" can mean standing if there are only a few over and above the seating capacity, and there aren't enough to justify a second bus, so get out of the airport and up to the queue as quick as you can! Expense is the only drawback. Went to a pub to watch the football on Sunday, and ended up sipping my way through 3 pints at £6.50 a pint! You end up eating at McDonalds as it's the only affordable tourist food in the whole city! Recommendation - book a sightseeing tour by coach. If the "hop on hop off" bus isn't running (and I bet it isn't until about March time) there is a Tourist Information office in the train station that sell tickets for a guided tour that picks up outside the rear of City Hall - we thought that was excellent. Would also strongly recommend Copenhagen. Cheap flights from Stansted on Easyjet, and you can take a 20min train ride from Central Station to Malmo in Sweden, if like us you want to notch up an extra country on your travels. In Copenhagen we stayed at The Square ( www.thesquare.dk - booked direct for about £85/night - slap bang in the centre). Whatever you do, Scandinavia is strongly recommended for a city break, and particularly in Denmark, it needn't cost as much as you might think.
Oslo City Most expensive city in the world! £7 a pint at least. A nice compact city with all the sights! Parliment, palace and main shopping area all withing 1-2 km. 10 minutes from the town center is Holmenkollen and some of the best nature you've ever seen. I'd prefer Copenhagen myself or Stockholm. Much larger cities. Try Bergen if you want a Norwegian city... Much better than Oslo! PS! It's not dark all day and it won't be that cold in February! I'll meet you for a pint or 10 if you want!
And again There are 3-4 of us from this site that live in/near Oslo. We could meet up and get pissed (on moonshine).
Ah ha, McDog, good suggestion re meeting up, but in Egypt in Feb. Would really recommend Oslo, and echo all said before. Also went to Copenhagen last month and thought it was great but as I live in oslo stay in Oslo. The idea of been in the City and then Skining within an hour I think is great. BE REd
go for it Yep, Oslo is a lovely place. Went to visit the university 18 months ago for a few days and had a great time. Freezing cold, and very expensive as every says, but its worth it. Plus, the girls are all, without exception, stunningly gorgeous.
The girls!! I've a constant hard on when i'm in Oslo. Nice English pub just by the Parliment buildings. It's owned by northerners n'all. Full of Englishmen and 2 football matches everyday!
The Girls Yep, I remember I was in a bakery in Oslo, and all the girls who worked there were beautiful, blond angels. Then about a dozen female university stduents piled in and they were ALL stunning blonds. Trouble is I was troughing on a sausage role type thing and the sudden fox-overload casued me to cough on the pastry and splutter my roll everywhere. Smooth. I'm so English.
