how come Van Homo got a 3 match ban and Hume a 1 match ban, both for red cards, and i presume both for 2 bookings?

Correct. 3 games for a straight red, 1 for two yellows.

    Not entirely true

It's 3 games for a red card given for violent conduct. A straight red for a professional foul or a hand ball is only a 1 match ban.
