Surely as they have to bowl India out again the best chance of doing that is making them bat on?

After bowling enough overs to fill a one day international, a little rest for the bowlers of a few hours will help them out when they have to bowl again. I'd say the right decision was made.

I think it is just to give the bowlers a rest.

I get that, just think it'll end in tears as we've seen recently - we'll bat for too long and then India will prod everything and hold out. Hope I'm wrong

I agree with you and while I certainly don't claim to be an expert but if it was my decision I would have made them follow on.

Bowlers have had some long sessions and will have more in the rest of the series. Need to make sure they aren't burnt out and miss the opportunity to win this test. We should back our bowlers after resting through our second innings then plenty of time to bowl them out. If we cant then we simply haven't been good enough

Its also the only realistic way England can lose

    Scenario -
England bowlers are tired and dont bowl as well against a rested Indian batting line up so they have a lead of 130 when bowled out around lunchtime tomorrow England then have to bat having been in the field for 3 days on a deteriorating wicket and get bowled out cheaply

    More likely
England bowlers are tired and dont bowl as well against a rested indian batting line up who bat well into tomorrow and the game fizzles out into a draw

The alternative is England bat for a couple of sessions whilst the pitch is still in better condition get an unassailable lead and then try to bowl India out on a deteriorating pitch having given their bowlers a rest

I think they have probably taken the right choice - If they fail with this approach I dont think they would have won had they enforced the follow on either

Thereev is right again......er I mean for once!

Spot on tho, pile up the runs, declare at tea and they bat last on a last day wicket.

Afternoon Session now critical in terms of run rate. Must get a good quick knock which bats them out and then still have plenty of time today and tomorrow

Agreed - would be tempted to send Buttler in next and see if we can get a lead of over 400 by tea or at worst 30 mins after and then give us 4 sessions to bowl then out

As we are already past the biggest ever run chase i'd get out sooner than 450 and get the buggers bowled out!

Yeah, but if anyone can fook it up, then its us...don't think we will...the other bowlers need to back Jimmy and Broady tho..not good enough so far.

We arent actually past the biggest ever run chase quite yet - wasnt that 418 by the WI against Australia but I think we could be declaring now 400 is more than enough on this pitch and we definitely need to get them in well before tea

Can't believe professional cricketers can't bowl 50 overs or so over two days at the same quality/pace. Cyclists ride millions of miles in the Tour De France.

These Cricketers are too pampered etc etc etc.
