What is a bit torrent? What does it do? Should I have one? Do they come in packs of six? What colours do they come in? Am I too old to understand?
I consider myself young and don't really understand from what I can gather they are a faster and more illegal way to download music/movies, as an alternative to p2p services like Limewire and Bearshare. hope that helps S)
Basically it's a way of sending large files over the internet but mostly used for music, films and porn though you can use it to send anything. Basically on a normal p2p service like Limewire you just download an entire file from one user or small group of users. With a Bittorrent you only download a small part of each file from a number of different users e.g. if you download a 2 hour film you might get 10 mins from one user, 5 from another, and 15 from another, and so on. You also share the file as you download it, so that way the file is not coming from one unique source that everyone shares (as with Limewire etc) but each file is split into lots of small bits that everyone shares around between them. There are far more files available with bittorrent services, shorter download times, and less chance of you being traced should you be downloading anything illegal Get hold of a free programme called Azureus and download torrents from torrentportal.com or torrentspy and watch your hard drive fill
