Why is it cringeworthy? Been tradition at Oakwell, and probably every other ground, for many, many years. Used to think it was odd when I first stood on the Ponty aged about 11, but get it now.
Never done it before. I'll make sure I do now, just because it annoys you. Every home game, I'll be doing it.
Pre-game show of respect because football is a game and without opposition players we'd not be able to watch it.
No. There's enough aggression and 'win at all costs' mentality during the game. Respect from and towards either party beforehand and after, to remind us all it's only a sport, is something we should keep doing - at all costs.
No. Far too little respect shown in all walks of life these days. I'll never forget Paddy Kenny's last visit to Oakwell. He got the usual dog's abuse (including the way OTT personal stuff) and at the end of the game he went behind the Ponty goal and gave his gloves to a young Tarn fan. If he doesn't deserve some respect after that I give up. Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
give over! with all due regards the opposition goalie couldnt give a rats arse about us or wether we clap him or not.
I disagree, but whatever. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. And if the keeper claps back then he appreciates it too. There's nothing wrong with sportsmanship before/after the game.
I'm sure it used to be tradition to clap..the keeper hesitated.....and then if they clapped back the crowd went agggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh Or if they refused to clap they got booed.... I didn't make that up did I? Anyway, I agree with o/p's - its a nice tradition now.
I think the opposition keepers must find it a bit odd. "Have a round of applause pal, you've done nothing to warrant it and are probably baffled as to why you're receiving one but there you go"
Never understood it, never done it, never bothered me to be fair. Sent from my I-Oven using the internets
That's how I remember it aswell with odd knuckle shuffle hand gesture thrown in for anyone we really didn't like ( Kevin pressman ), sithi.
