http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Barnsley-...a_Football_Memorabilia_ET&hash=item5d3b01944e Andy Johnson! Must have been a brief spell... simon davey signing?
Played in the 2007-8 season. Not a world beater by any means but much better than some of the dross we have had to suffer of late.
Made 4 appearances in 2007-2008 season started the first 4 games then we brought Anderson de Silva in on loan from Everton
He was here for 2 years, but for the last year and 10 months, nobody knew his whereabouts. Had a fallout with Davey allegedly and spent the best part of 2 years just picking up a wage. If I remember right, by the time he left, rumour was, that he wasn't even training with us anymore. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
He came with high expectations before Davey froze him out of the squad entirely and refused to even mention him for about a year. He was one of several players who Davey pretended didnt exist just like Kim Christensen who he forced to sit on a bucket. Fans were begging for Johnson to play but instead Davey persisted with Colace and JCR in Johnsons position destabilising the entire side
You really have got some rose tinted glasses mate !! He was utter utter dross. Worse than Perkins and Dawson ever will be. He used to be a decent player, but for Barnsley he was gash of the highest order !!
The Andy Johnson debacle was extremely odd. Signed on a free from Leicester in the summer of 2007 after having a good career with Norwich, Forest and West Brom as well as playing for Wales a number of times. He was 33 when we got him, no spring chicken, but Simon Davey spoke well of him and said he was the experience we needed in central midfield. He started the first four league games of the season and the cup game at home to Darlington. We lost 4-1 at home to Coventry on opening day and he certainly didn't look good in that, but I don't remember thinking he was any worse than the rest of the team. We then beat Darlington and drew away to Colchester and although he wasn't making the headlines no one seemed to be complaining about his performances. Next up were Plymouth at Oakwell and we beat 'em 3-2 having gone 3-0 up. I thought Johnson played great and had him down as our motm. He looked to be exactly the type of midfield player that Davey had described. He could tackle and lay off the simple pass while just sitting in midfield and controlling the game with his experience. We then played Newcstle away in cup and Davey made about 10 changes, Johnson being one of the experienced players that were left out, but he was back in the team for the 2-0 defeat at West Brom. I don't know how he played there, I didn't go, but I do know we never saw him again. He never started another game, never came on as a sub and I don't believe he was ever even selected as a substitute. 5 appearances, 2 victories, 2 defeats and a draw and that was it, from first choice in central midfield to never making the squad again. Don't know what happened at that West Brom game or in the subsequent week, but whatever it was it ended Andy Johnson's professional football career. He was with us until May 2009, though you wouldn't have known it, after which he signed for Kings Lynn. Either we made a massive mistake and he was utter *****, having lost what he once had (that certainly didn't look to be the case in the victory over Plymouth) or summat happened between him and someone else at the club, rumour being that someone else was Simon Davey. Whichever, I can't imagine his wages were very small, having consistently played for clubs that would yo-yo between the Premier league and the Championship. A total waste of time and money as were Christensen, Mostto, Ricketts, Werling and Odejayi, who we also signed that summer, and Mattis, who we'd signed in January. I wonder how much money that lot cost us in transfer fees and wages. Scary just thinking about it. We also signed Rob Kozluk, so it wasn't all bad. *ahem*
Cheers Jay. But i still cant remember the bloke! Lol nevermind. The way davey treated some players was disgusting. Proper little hitler. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We've had some poor managers over recent years, but I think Simon Davey was the one I liked the least. Endless frustration and as you say, some of the stories that were coming out of the club were not nice.
He played in some of the reserve team or whatever they were called at the time and just looked like he could not be arsed ! He never tried at all , which I found strange as I thought we had signed a good one when he came here. Absolute waste of money.
Davey was a knobhead and probably as hated as Hill. Not helped by thousands of fans queuing for hours for Anfield tickets for him to come out of the door to the right of the box office, head down, not say a word and speed off in his 4x4, blanking the fans that supported his team. But since the turn of the century he's definately one of our best managers and underated considering everything.
If I was allowed, I'd tell some reight stories about Davey. But I'm not. But the overwhelming feeling was that he changed his mind too often.
Davey may or may not be a really lovely bloke. I've never met him to make an assessment. What I do know, though, is that he's Mourinho-esque compared to some of the truly dismal managers to have set foot inside Oakwell. Hello, Messrs Spackman, Parkin, Hendrie and Hart.
