I remember a certain Mr Hourihane (first time around) and Mr Mawson's form dipping when they took the armband. Doesn't make him a bad player over night! Seems to be alot of negativity around the terraces at the moment regarding certain players. All young lads, and there for me lies the problem. We need more leaders in the squad. Influential characters. Men not boys. To dictate, coordinate defence and attack, and provide calming influence and and assurance to younger lads. We have lost some big personalities from the dressing room and on the pitch in all areas in the last 12months e.g. Mawson, Roberts, White, Scowen, Hourihane, Kent, Watkins and Winnall. Kent being typical example last year he started quietly but grew in confidence as the season developed. We need players to come in who already have that confidence and can influence games. Who can make an immediate impact like we have had in the past e.g. Nardiello, Ashley Fletcher, James, Shotton, Dicko, McShane, Long etc Still talk of a couple more coming in. I wonder if anymore will depart. It will certainly be an interesting week ahead.
Well said Johnny. Gus has been elevated to senior defender and first team captain after only one season with us and at this level. He's young and relatively inexperienced at this level so he will make mistakes and will be inconsistent but I trust him to learn from his mistakes and I trust Hecky to carry on developing him. He hasn't become a bad player overnight but I do think an older head alongside him would be a big help.
Personally id have given it to Hammill he is the only experienced player we have. I guess he didn't at the time as hecky wasn't sure if Hammill will be a regular starter. Which is fair enough and just underlines how inexperienced our side is.
Losing Roberts has been a killer for us. Propped Angus up last season. Now he's not here the faults have been multiplied. Those that were saying Robbo going wasn't a problem have no eyes.
