I have a peugeot 206 and my steering wheel shakes when i go over 60, i have been told it might be my traction whats not right, so what i need to no, is where is the best place to go to get it sorted. I have also been told about a laser thing, what will make it a lot better, anyone know the correct technical term for it? Cheers
sounds like ya front wheels just need tracking up, useually costs between 10 and 15 quid. Theyve got laser equiptment at taskers at stairfoot.
Shaking at speed is wheel balancing. If when you break suddenly, your car viers to one side, then tracking. Test by going 10-20mph and lightly holding steering wheel. (Make sure no one is behind you) and apply breaks quickly. Not an emergency stop, but almost as hard. If it drifts, tracking (or brake pads, but this wouldn't cause shaking at speed). If car drifts to one side when travelling, then could be tracking or under inflated tyres.
if the steering wobbles then stops or decreases then it,s probly wheels need balancing, if tyres are wearing faster on inside/outside then tracking, if the car veers when braking the the brakes arnt balanced.
As W1zzio said most likely wheel balance One question - do you have the stupid alloy wheels with no centre hole? If you do the garages need to use an adapter to balance the wheels - I have had lots of fun with my 406 (same stupid lack of hole). If you have the alloys - have a look at the weights on the wheel rim for balance, if there is more than 10grammes its almost certain that the balancing has made it worse and you are actuually better off removing them all together. If you get them re-balanced make sure the garage knows how to balance the peugeot wheels with no centre hole. - If you have steel wheels anyone should be able to balance them properly. Note other possible cause is a worn drive shaft - if thats the case its worse going up hill or when accelerating. Nowt to do with tracking
