Around 30 supporters were evacuated from the vehicle after it burst into flames on the M42, near junction 4, at about 2235 BST on Tuesday.

They were heading to Cardiff from the West Midlands after watching their team beat West Bromwich Albion 4-2.

Firefighters were called to the scene and another coach took fans home.

Paramedic Ian Ritchie, who was called to the incident on the southbound carriageway, between junction 4 and junction 4a, said: "When I arrived on scene, the coach was well alight and was making popping sounds from the intensity of the blaze.

"Thankfully the driver had managed to get the 30 or so fans, including one in a wheelchair, off the coach before the fire took hold.

    Ferocity

"He said that he had pulled on to the hard shoulder when smoke started coming into the vehicle.

"Given the ferocity of the fire, the driver's quick actions certainly helped prevent a far more serious incident.

"I used my vehicle to provide some protection for the fans who had moved away from the fire.

"Once police and fire arrived I checked that no-one was hurt. All of the fans were able to get onto the other coach and it took them to the next services where they were to await a replacement vehicle."

The coach was one of two travelling back to Cardiff.

West Midlands Police said nobody was injured.

The blaze came after Cardiff City's summer signings, Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, scored to help secure victory.
