I know the stadium is not the most modern , but why is it so big.

Did they used to be a good side years ago .

18k capacity seems big for a league 1/2 side

Isn't most of it standing so not really that big, we used to have a 35,000 capacity when we were in div 4 and had loads of standing.

p.s. they did have a season in the top division in 1974-75

They were in the old First Division back in about 1974 having taken the place of (I think) Manchester United. After 3 matches they were top of the table, but from then on it was all down hill.

a lot of the older grounds had larger capacities(because it was standing),a bit like oakwell. When we were getting promoted from the fourth division there was near on 30 thou in,it was fantastic. Its like a morgue these days in comparison.
I'd love to see the ground with some terracing, like the modern rugby league grounds,it makes for a great atmosphere as those that want to sing, shout and jump abart can congregate together,as opposed to half a dozen trying to get on one seat like we had in the ponty last season.

They built one stupid stand a few years ago that doesn't even fit the pitch - rest of it is proper old school with fantastic bars in the main stand - straight out the pub and straight into your seat. Been a few times with my mates who are Carlisle fans
