Can't see it making much of a difference. People will still pay 5p to keep their wheelie bin cleaner. Businesses will do in store special offers to keep you going back so you don't mind paying to promote their company by walking the street with their bags. If it had been 50p per plastic bag or even 20p then it might have made a difference.
What galls me is that the bags I used to get from the coop over twenty years ago were biodegradable, why didn't they push on an continue to make all bags like this.
It does work we have had this charge in Wales for a couple of years now. You just keep few bags in your car boot - no big deal.
aye but more often than not we forget to replace the bags in the boot.... and have ended up with about four bags full of more bags.
Re: aye but more often than not Its only plactic carrier bags they charge 5p for, i wont be long before we are all like the yanks and bring our grub home form asda in big brown paper bags
no not really they will be doing like they do down here in Wales. All the major supermarkets sell "Bag for Life" carrier bags at about 50p. If they break tear or whatever they replace them for free.
Re: no not really Wont effect us, not used super market carriers for a long time, Wife got lots of those bags for life carriers. Much easier to fill a few of those than loads of carriers anyway
Do you pay for the bags if you shop on line and get it delivered, not that I'm over bothered nowt on telly Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Because plastic is almost infinately recyclable - making plastic bio degrade should be a criminal offence. There's only so much oil - burning it should be a crime, but destroying the element of plastic that can be used in such engineering miracles as carrier bags is frankly stupid.
I was impressed with asdas unique take on it this morning. They removed ALL normal carriers from their tills this morning. I think somebody misunderstood the new rules
If you mean "it works because now the supermarkets don't fork out millions every year for carrier bags" - you're right. If you mean "it works because the environment is now saved" you're very very far from reality
There was a report in one of the trade mags (i used to be a supermarket manager and still get the grocer et al delivered to my house) that although the number of "free" carrier bags now charged at 5p has reduced in wales, the sale of bin liners has increased by 50% as people now use these to line their bins as they are far cheaper than 5p each. swings and roundabouts….
I can see why that would be true. Easy though to have a small bin in your kitchen (with a supermarket carrier in) and when it's full take it out to the wheelie bin. Bin liners are far too big for that. I'm sure bin men are going to enjoy getting messier at work now from muckier bins from people using less bags in them. Going to be more time consuming to empty a bin too if something won't leave it when emptied.
