Have you any files in the XP writer software.

That may cause a problem if you have tried using the basic writing software that comes with XP.

there are no files to be written via xp's way of doing it.

Don't use it often, so i can't pin point it to anything.

Just drive in use with another application.... Is there anyway of checking what?

May be the dodgy software for CD-RW disc yer some times get with Nero.

    Usually a re-install does it.

Funny bugger Nero, for months mine wouldn't burn audio discs higher than 4x speed, then the error mysteriously disapeared....

    The b@*****.....

Make sure Nero is pointing to the drive you have the blank in and not the other one.

Try Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device manager.
Click on CD/DVD drives, right click your writer and select Uninstall.
    Once uninstalled, restart the machine.

    See if that helps.
