Why would someone want to become the chairman of a football club?
What is in it for them?

I don't know but I'll be annoyed if he didn't have to produce a Colchester stub prior to being appointed

A wage? I don't know if Maurice Watkins will be paid or not, but if he is then everyone has to earn a living.

If not, then the challenge. Take a look at Mr Watkins' CV and it's clear he likes to keep busy. Some people make model boats, some ride their bike, some have an allotment, while it appears Mr Watkins enjoys being a board member/chairman, particularly of sporting and charitable institutions. He's obviously good at it, due to him being in such high demand, but I would also hazard a guess he loves doing it too.

    I would imagine it's both.

Good question. Usually for the status and ability to guide the club, as a fan. However, having read John Dennis's book I would say it is a good way to give yourself major stress, for very little reward.

If you're talking about Maurice specifically, I would guess that 1) he his helping out his good friend Cryne and 2) will charge a per diem for every time he's at Oakwell / attends a meeting. That could be thousands of pounds a day for a person of his stature. Alternatively, he could be charged with selling the club and receive no money along the way but receive a sizeable "finder's fee" at the end. Just my thoughts on the situation, so I could be way off the mark.

Some Chairmen types are paid honorariums for their services. It looks great on the CV - (just look at his).

I would imagine in this situation he is paid for his expertise, without the necessity for him to lose financially (like Chairmen who do it as a hobby).

Agreed, i put cash as Maurice is clearly at the stage where his C.V is so stacked he commands it.

To be honest, I don't think he needs the cash. I'm pretty sure the primary reason he is here is to help out his friend Cryne.

Quite possibly, cant see him doing it for free though. I hope your 100% right because if thats the case he'll definatly give that extra 10% that will make the difference for us.

He will be receiving fees of some sort from most of the roles he does, let's not forget he is an in demand lawyer too. He is obviously one of those people who thrive in that business/corporate/boardroom environment so it becomes their life. All the fees/salaries etc soon stack up, each individual one doesn't need to be massive, he will be minted anyway, I can't see him being too expensive for us, particularly with his friendship with PC.
