I was talking to a bloke yesterday and I asked him if he was going to Oakwell. The said man stopped going to Barnsley when D.Wilson was appointed and he said he wouldn't return until he had left. When I reminded him of this he said he now supported another team.I asked which team,Aquaforce was his reply.I don't get it,we are a town with a football league team and he chooses a Sheffield affiliated (through owner) team who to make matters worse play in blue.Speechless.

Not a genuine, lifelong Barnsley fan then is he? Just someone who goes along if things are going well. Not saying there is anything wrong with that because anyone can please themselves and the club need the money from these occasional supporters just as much as those who will renew year after year automatically.

But for someone who does that to say "I am a Barnsley fan" doesn't mean anything. If you are, you go. No matter what league the team play in, no matter who the opposition are, no matter who the current manager is. It's a lifelong, ingrained thing if you are a true fan. Otherwise it would mean just the same thing pitching up at Hillsborough, or Old Trafford as it does going to Oakwell. You wouldn't really care who won the match. It would just be football with no allegiance whatsoever.

I know someone who was a Sunderland fan, but she lived in Newcastle.

Then, years later she started following Newcastle.

    She dropped that for Speedway

    Now watches Ice Hockey

My dad was same he said he wouldnt watch barnsley again while wilson was in charge we got him tickets with me for boro game in fa he went reluctantly after he said that was terrible. Dont know how people can change alligence though but I suspect if we started winning again and playing some good stuff your mate would be back doqn to oakwell in a flash.

My mum used to watch Wednesday and my Dad used to watch Leeds. Both been season ticket holders at Oakwell for the last 15 years or so.

You cant change - I tried as commuting 400 miles isnt really that sensible. I watched Liverpool occasionally when I lived there in the early 80s and they were well worth watching but still my heart was at Oakwell, and I have been to games down here with friends but its just not the same.

The wife just won 4 tickets for an Aldershot league match, any home league match this season - She has given the voucher to me as she hates footy. I will use the voucher and pick a game when I cant get to see us - though the way they have started this season I am not sure its a good idea but even if they are transformed and play entertaining winning football I still wont get hooked on them. Wish I could as it would be a lot cheaper but I cant change

To be fair, that fella doesn't even know what his own name is, let alone what team to support.

I used to watch Aldershot now and then when I had in-laws in Church Crookham - it was just going to a match and meant nothing.

When watching Salisbury and then Gloucester City it was different. They were my local teams and I really wanted them to win but I ALWAYS had my radio to catch score flashes from Barnsley matches - no internet coverage in those days.

I only got up to Barnsley now and then but they were still my team and every single person that I met or worked with knew I was from Barnsley. Some were even interested in that fact! Not often you meet Barnsley fans in the Cotswolds or Wiltshire.

The point is you can follow any team, home or abroad, but the TRUE football fan only has ONE team that matters.

My parents me at Elland Road in the 70s, married in the early 80s and both stopped going thereafter (babies and finances probably the reason). When me and my brother were old enough (1993-94), they took us to Barnsley games, then we all got season tickets. My dad has been back at Leeds for 10-15 years now, but my mum still goes home and away with the reds, alone.

    Weird how it all works.

Thing is its hard to watch that turgid ***** week in week out regardless of results.

Aquaforce play decent football regardless of owner or division. Same wi rec same wi brigg for a hell of a lot less money and frustration.

should things change at oakwell then perhaps he might come back into the fold.

Agreed, you can't change. Watched various games as a neutral but never a patch on it being your own team.

Doesn't Tyrone regularly apply for the title of Barnsley's most fickle fan? He won't go to Cup games unles he's guaranteed his own seat and swore he'd never go to Oakwell again if we signed some rubbish ex-Leeds midfielder on loan, which we did (although it has yet to be determined whether the club specifically signed this player just because they heard of Tyrone's threat!).
