The one north of Sheffield, not the one in L***s. Is it any good for a night out? Or an afternoon out? Or both? I've been asked to organise a senior railcard outing from Dodworth to somewhere by train, and wondered if Chapeltown is any good. Any info on pubs, ale, entertainment, snap etc much appreciated.
Sorry,unsure about Chapeltown, but if you like real ales you could do Kelham island pubs, heard they're really good.
What about Elsecar? There's Elsecar Heritage Centre to wander around which might be of interest to Senior Railcarders and the Milton Arms Pub nearby which I've always liked.
Been there and I agree, some really good pubs and ales there, but my team want to find somewhere a bit closer to a train station, hence Chapeltown. Already been to Huddersfield, Penistone and Elsecar on similar trips.
Been to Elsecar a couple of times, a great day out, wish I could remember how we got home but the outward journey was on the train. Might end up going again, but wanted to try something different.
Im from Elsecar and I have a few mates from Ecclesfield and Wadsley Bridge, so we meet up in 'chap' quite often. Its sound to be honest, the waggon and horses (used to be scandals) is a wetherspoons now so is reasonabley priced and always a few in and does cheap snap, theres a chance you will get serenaded by a toothless crone whos been on cheap red wine all day, but thats par for the course in a 'spooins'. Theres 'escape' round corner which is decent and the coach and horses just up road is good too, all in spittin distance of the train station. Elsecar is good too, not that far from train station for a good selection of boozers (including the milton arms) and the heritage. Hope this helps mate
To vary it, you could always look at catching the bus from Elsecar up to Wentworth. You can then walk to Wentworth Woodhouse or around the garden centre and take in some beer and snap at the Rockingham Arms or George and Dragon. Depends on the mobility of those involved though, of course, and I'm not sure how regular the bus service is these days.

We're all quite mobile, and I'm in fact a long distance walker/camper myself who loves doing extended pub crawls like the Pennine Way! This mobility though does tend to deteriorate during the course of an afternoon/evening, hence the proximity to a train station. Thanks for the suggestion.
I live in grenoside which is also S35 - in my opinion chapeltown is a s##thole full of nobs just wanting to scrap. grenoside itself has some nice pubs however there have unfortunately been two shootings in recent times at the old harrow. Silly really as its a lovely village
Mmm... a fellow Grenosider... didn't know that. Can't believe what's been going on at The Old Harrow. I was in there with friends just a few days before the latest shooting. Crazy for such a nice village. Re Chapeltown, I'm pretty sure Stahlrost and his pals will have a good time down there. Agree it can be a bit chavvy, but the new Weatherspoons looks nice, and I think there's a couple of more traditional style pubs on the road that goes out towards Elsecar. The Royal Oak always seems to have older customers, whilst the one on the right on the road up to Burncross seems to have the youths? Another consideration for Stahlrost - Dronfield. There are a couple of pubs near the village, and the Three Tuns was the highlight of the walk to Chesterfield. Real Ale, home cooked food, great staff. About half a mile/ a mile out of the village.
Oh, and any trip to Dronfield would have to include The Sheffield Tap. The decent pub in Chap according to him indoors is the Commercial, which is the one on the road our towards Elsecar. Walking distance from the station, cut through Asda Car Park, turn right, walk down the hill. He reckons start there, but you may not leave.
I'm from Oughtibridge (S35 as well - about a 3 miles over from Chapeltown). I can think of a lot of other places I'd rather go for a beer before I went there.... If you really need to be close to a train station I'd recommend going all the way into Sheffield and having a few pints in the Sheffield Tap (the real ale pub in the station). If you're feeling reasonably energetic you could walk out to Kelham Island from there or get a bus/tram most of the way. It will be worth the effort!
Thank you young lady. I've just done a recci in the car, looks like at least 3 decent pubs including the Commercial, Coach and Horses and Waggon and Horses, real ale on offer, and at least 2 of them allow dogs in which if course is vital! Commercial looks like a pub we might get stuck in, as your advisor has suggested. We'll give it a try, in the next couple of weeks. Not sure about Dronfield, a bit of a trek. Grenoside is also a great night out (provided we don't accidently sit in the regulars' seats while they're at home deciding what time to go out. Bit too difficult to get to though, unless we can arrange someone who lives local to pick us up and drop us off.........
Depending on when it is, I"d happily drive a small group from Dodworth to Grenoside. Safe to say you'd be in taxi on way home! Got room for 6 in the car. Taxi is around £25 I believe.
