There is no doubting his higher level Jordan Rhodes scoring record makes him the best striker outside of the top flight, but I don't think he'd make it in the premiership. If he makes the step up he'd probably be another Connor Wickham. I've seen him play a few games now either against us or on TV and he's not impressed me in any game. Again last night it was his typical game of being anonymous all game but lucky enough to get on the scoresheet. He doesn't tackle, looks poor in the air and doesn't look a team player. He seems to just stand around bone idle while others do all the work.
Scores goals though. Id rather have someone who 'doesn't tackle, looks poor in the air and doesn't look a team player' but gets 20 odd a season like Austin, rather than someone who tackles, puts the work rate in and works hard for the team but doesn't and probably never will score all season like Dagnall. Goals win games. Just my opinion, like
So would I. As I said he's the best striker out of the top flight. I just don't think he'd make it in the premiership and would be like when Wickham joined Sunderland when he should have stayed at Ipswich. In the premiership you can't go missing in games. You've got to try and make things happen for yourself which i'm not sure he does.
He didn't do a great deal after scoring their goal though, in my opinion. But he does know where the goal is, that's for sure.
All depends on which club he joins in Premiership. If he goes to a club who will play him regularly (Wigan, Norwich - that kinda team) Then he's got a chance purely because he can finish. Might even raise his game when he ges there. Wickham should never have left at that age. Typical young player seeing the bright lights of the Prem before he's ready for it.
It also helps him a lot when our defenders leave him completely unmarked and unchallenged in the penalty area from a corner. He didn't even have to work for his goal last night. Not good enough.
Not sure if you have player or not but you should watch Tudgays interview. It was his job to mark Austin at that corner and he says he got blocked off. Was really mad with himself for losing him. Said he was happy with his goal but it didn't make up for being at fault for their goal
Really? I haven't seen that interview but why would we put a striker on the top striker in the league from a corner? Surely its a job for a centre half. Its this damned awful zonal marking that causes the problem.
Yeah I presume he was in Tudgays zone lol. was watching sky other day (sound like hemsie now lol) and Gary Neville was saying he hates zonal marking and that man marking is the best way
Interesting, though, that he was spotted in the Danny Wilson era at Swindon. Good judge of a player, Danny!
Zonal marking = basketball NOT football I actually thought Charlie Austin ended up dropping deep to defend (in midfield) quite a lot last night, which suggests REDS had most posession/attacking threat.
It is not zonal, it is part zonal. Some players are tasked with marking specific players who are deemed to be a threat at corners, and some are left in the zone in front of goal and at the near post to cut out balls hit in low.
