Charlton are just one place above. What tactics should SD employ on Saturday, bearing in mind the great majority of our last 30 or so away games have ended negative for us. Do you think we should play cautiously and hope for something, a point perhaps? Or bearing in mind Charlton are lacking in confidence, (they scraped an apparently undeserved draw against Ipswich on Tuesday) should we say, to hell with it, let's go for 3 points? I think we ought to go all out for a win. If we go one up, let's go for two, and not sit back. If we lose, at least we would lose going for it, unlike at Palace where we went down 3-0 anyway with cautious tactics and little fight.
For me we have to play 4-4-2, which the last few home games we have played really well with. Hulme needs to remain central instead of sticking him out wide, he's shown on numerous occasions is eye for goal.
What gets me is we have the players to attack teams with pace, and when we play teams who are low on confidence we should be trying to use that even more. For once I am not concerned about the defence whether it be home or away.
We played Charlton a couple of weeks ago & I took a keen interest in them because my old man's a Charlton fan - a real skeleton in the family cupboard that one! They played a 4-5-1 formation against us & started off quite brightly but their lack of confidence really showed when they failed to make early pressure count. Nicky Weaver in goals was poor - and at fault for both our goals imo, although he wasn't helped by his wall for the 2nd. Their defence (with the exception of Linvoy Primus who played well) was woeful and is the main reason they're struggling. No cohesion & full of basic errors. They packed the midfield with Andy Gray dropping back to help the other 4. Matty Holland is showing his age & Darren Ambrose, someone I've always rated, was pretty much anonymous. Nicky Bailey did ok, Bouazza looked their most dangerous player by far. Luke Varney played up front and could easily have been mistaken for Reg Varney. Get at them, they're nothing special and their home form (which helped them finish mid-table last season) is nowhere near as good as it has been.
RE: Charlton away. Let's hope SD reads this thread. Thanks for the info Bluebird, hope our management team are aware of Charlton's vulnerability. Reinforces the views of me and several others on here to just Go for it with an attacking strategy.
Agreed mate Sitting back and inviting the other team to attack rarely works unless you have a great back 4 and the rest defend superbly. Attacking them stops them from getting too many players forward.
Donny are worse than Charlton and he was negative there so.... Macken up front on his own again, a striker on the wing with another striker coming on to play on the right wing and then a full back to come on and play in midfield.
RE: Charlton away. Let's hope SD reads this thread. No probs mate. You're certainly playing Charlton at the right time - their confidence is obviously low, Pardew is under pressure from the fans (board are backing him at the moment) and there is a general air of depression following their take-over collapse. They could be one of the "surprise" teams involved in a relegation battle if things don't turn around fairly quickly for them.
