try www.thetrainline.com

Though I'm not sure how cheap tickets will be. I have to go up from Kettering (couple of stops North of London St. Pancras on the London-Sheffield line (via Leicester)) to Barnsley and it cost me £24 but the London lot might know a way to get it cheaper

A trick we do at work is book Sheffield to Derby then Derby to destination. No idea how train companies operate but it saves money. Worth a try

    Trainline or Virgin Trains sites

    best ones I used.

Massive price variations depending on when you need to travel (both time of day and how far planning in advance). Cheapest I ever got was £16 first class return but that was from Donny and they had a special offer on. Cant go wrong at that price though. Usually you can pick up deals for around £30-£40 return standard class.

    24 pounds?

I can get from London to Wakefield for less than 12 quid if I book it two or three weeks in advance, you must travel at peak times?

The trainline.com is a good website, but also try the national express website and look through their train section, sometimes works out even cheaper.

thetrainline.com tends to be more expensive

Try National Express's site or EastMidland trains and you tend to get a better deal.

Also, be careful of trainline.com as it insists you catch the Nottingham train from Barnlsey and change at Nottingham. Mind, one of the other sites suggests you change at Chesterfield but at least it's configurable.

iv been on the trainline website, got a decent return fare at £37.50, but then it goes back to the main screen of options where the prices are 3 times as much :)S) and wont let me go with the cheap option, even though it said the tickets were available! aarghh

theres 4 of us wanting tickets; 1 with a railcard, and one age 15.

Search from just Doncaster - Kings Cross on National Express site, then just pay the fare to Donny via Meadowhall on the day. Probably work out cheaper, especially with the rail card.

I work for National Rail Enquiries at ventura

the best way is to book 10-12 weeks in advance from Sheffield to london St Pancras. However if you are traveling sooner than that ring 01709768621 (to get through to the English call centre) and ask for the cheapest tickets avilable for your date of travel and if u don't get a muppet you will be given the best price. I do warn u tho if your travelling on a weekend expect it to be high. Cheapest time to travel is between 1-3 on a week day

    RE: 24 pounds?

I can't book much in advance unfortunately...all depends on my financial situation in the week prior to a game.

Though if I can get to Peterborough, its about £12 ish I think

I just use the netwrok rail site and check the timetable & fares.

Always worth a look at stating a specific time to travel rather than an open ticket and check out First Class, sometimes cheaper
    than standard !

I think it must be more expensive to travel from Barnsley / Sheffield

IIRC, it cost me about £24 before Christmas from Sheffield. We booked well in advance (and travelled off peak), but couldn;t get it any cheaper than that.

A friend of mine travelled from Doncaster and it was miles cheaper - but it's not so easy for me to get to Doncaster. Maybe Wakefield is the same..

    Checkout national Express coach fares.

    Some excellent deals.
