Had my cat at the vets and it cost me £134 for her anal glands (i know!) clearing out, this cost includes antibiotics & anti-inflam tabs. I think it's abit steep. Had to take her back again today as she hasn't done any toilet business - more cost. She's got to go back again tomorrow, it seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing, so if anyone can recommend a reasonably vet please let me know. My other cat had to have all his teeth out because of gingivitis and that cost £240. Definately going to see if i can get them insured now, learnt my lesson.

Don't go to Abbey, very expensive. Vets4Pets on Huddersfield Road is quite good, don't seem to mess you around, tell you what needs doing straight away rather than trying loads of other things first.

I wonder if that's what's wrong with Bluebeard.

Can't believe what they've charged you. There must be a massive mark up on the medications. Apparently you can do the clearing bit yourself with dogs, don't know about cats. Inward and upwards pressure and keep out of the way.

LOL'S your definately right about bluebeard. he has got anal problems - his heads stuck up it.
My friend told me that about dogs but didn't believe it. They had to put my cat to sleep to do it because they said they were that bad. I don't think i could cope with doing a DIY anal drainage!

You can ask for a prescription instead and buy medication online

if you're going to be having continual medicines, shop around and see if you can get the meds cheaper elsewhere. Your vet can not refuse to give you a prescription to purchase the antibiotics etc from another source.

You're right, if you ask the vet for a prescription then they have to provide it. However, she/he can only do so for animals classed as 'under their care'. This means seeing the animal and dependant on what the illness is, this can mean that the vet would only be willing to give repeat prescriptions if the animal was checked every 3 months, 6 months, or year. At our place the majority of cases are 6 month checks.

Correct, but they are unwilling to put posters up in their vet practices to inform the people who are getting ripped off daily that perscriptions are free of charge. Also to inform their customers that they can go onto the internet and get medication for their animals at a much, much , much cheaper rate than their Vets charge. Solicitors, Dentists, Vets, surely they are having a laugh, at our expense.

They're hardly going to advertise that you can go elsewhere tho'. Just like they don't advertise when certain products like Frontline are no longer POM's so can be purchased elsewhere, usually much cheaper

My Bull terrier as has had epilepsy since she was 3 years old, at the time i thought about putting her down, but i loved her so much i couldn't do it. She is now a grand old lady of 14. Ever since she was diagnozed i have been paying medication fees in excess of £30 per month, and on top of that a fee evey 6 months for the Vet to examine her. I don't know when the parliamentary bill came into action that Vets can give their clients a FREE prescription, but what i do know my vet was charging me vast ammouts of money for medication ,in the knowledge that they knew that this bill existed and never informed me about it.

I came across this website on canine medication , and low and behold there was an information sheet on the rights, that patients can get in their vets practice, it was all their in black and white. I photo-copied this and presented all the information to my vet. They were gobsmacked that someone had gone to all these lenths, and they were even more reluctant to give me a perscription for my medication, untill i informed them that i would take it up with my MP. I got my perscription and now instead of paying£135 per month, i now pay £38 per month for my dogs medication, which i get from the internet.

well done to you! I fully understand where you are coming from, but as I said, a vet isn't going to tell you anything that would undercut themselves if they can help it. I know when I first mentioned the free prescription on here last year that there were quite a few people not aware of this.

Your case is just one of the many thousands that ensured the fair competition bill was passed.

The figures i quoted was i was paying the vet £30 per month for medication, £180 per 6 months. i am now paying £38 per every six months. Just to clear that up. :)
