By Gavin Brown - Friday, November 16, 2007

The news thousands of ordinary supporters are to take control of Ebbsfleet United seems great for fans feeling disenfranchised by the modern game.

Cheesed off at paying £50 to watch a team owned by a billionaire American? Simple, pay £35 instead and you can be a club owner too.

You can even have a say in running the club and picking the team. MyFootballClub is a brilliant principle – the ultimate combination of reality TV and computer games like Championship Manager.

Love that badge: Ebbsfleet

But it's flawed in reality because of the decision (taken for financial reasons presumably) to buy a small club with such a low profile.

Ebbsfleet manager Liam Daish is the best man to pick the United team because he's the one who spends all week studying the players, unlike his thousands of cyber-bosses.

What can some bloke behind a PC in Barnsley possibly know about the various qualities of Conference standard players he's never seen play?

Of course that's not to say the idea is without merit, it just needs to be done with a team where the thousands picking the side know all about the players.

Perhaps a team which spent a large sum paying off a manager last summer, may have to shell out for another big redundancy package next week and might not be able to afford a high-profile successor.

Fancy managing England, anyone?

Of course, even if England don't qualify for Euro 2008, the FA could decide to give Steve McClaren a second chance.

It's this lot that need help

If they do it would strengthen the similarities between McClaren and a former England manager.

Sir Bobby Robson got the job after good work with Ipswich in the UEFA Cup while McClaren led Middlesbrough to the final of the same competition before taking the England reins.

Neither man was everyone's first choice. Sir Bobby won the UEFA Cup but many people wanted Brian Clough, who had gone one better in winning the European Cup. Twice. Similarly McClaren has been seen as a poor second to Martin O'Neill.

Sir Bobby didn't have the best of starts, failing to qualify for Euro 84 despite losing just one qualifier. McClaren… well, you know the next bit.

Robson offered to resign (possibly not something McClaren should risk) but was persuaded to carry on and led England to a World Cup quarter-final in 1986 and a semi-final in 1990.

It couldn't happen again could it? Probably not.
