Andy Ritchie has been very harshly treated by the Barnsley board.

Andy was the man who turned their season around last year as they made it out of League One.

When he went there the squad wasn't good enough technically but he developed a great spirit and camaraderie that carried them through.

Ability wise Barnsley weren't really good enough to get out of that division, but Ritchie got them promoted and he deserved all the credit in the world for that.

I remember speaking to him just after their play-off win against Swansea and saying that this year in the Championship would be far more difficult given the squad that he had.

Tongue-in-cheek I said to him that if you get an opportunity to get out then do it, but he was very keen to continue, having just got Barnsley promoted, so it didn't happen.

To sack Andy after refusing him permission to speak to Sheffield Wednesday is incredible.

What were the board trying to achieve?

Denying him the opportunity to go to a bigger club and then giving him the boot is detrimental to Ritchie's career.

A manager who doesn't go and spend the chairman's money and is trying to look around for the right players while being thrifty is exactly what is needed at this level.

The board are blaming a lack of ambition as the excuse for sacking Andy Ritchie but that doesn't wash with anybody.

There would have been plenty of time to bring new people in and spend the chairman's money in January, but maybe the players that he wants haven't become available yet.

There's no question that Andy Ritchie has every right to feel let down by the Oakwell hierarchy.

Unfortunately he's not the first manager to be let down and he won't be the last.

But for someone who had just got them promotion and with a team that is still in with a fighting chance of staying in the Championship this season I think he deserved better.

It would have been difficult, that goes without saying, but it would have been difficult for anyone working with the squad that Barnsley have got.

Simon Davey has been put in temporary charge but I can't believe he is going to be able to do any better than Andy did.

I just hope the club do the honourable thing and pay the compensation Andy will be owed for the remainder of his contract after he made Barnsley a lot of money last year when they got promotion.

The board obviously took the decision hoping that a new man can come in and give the side fresh impetus with crucial games against Southend and Leeds on the horizon.

But the lads at Barnsley thought so much of Andy Ritchie that there is every chance that it could go the other way.

Not b*llocks, he talks some sense

But the players will have more about them than to do what he's inferring.

He hasn't a clue what's being going off at Oakwell.

    Kamara is undoubtedly a clown.

I find it very hard to disagree with what he says on this though. I suspect most neutrals will share his views.

It's very easy to be swayed by the boards comments in light of the fact that they too have done an excellent job in securing the future of BFC. However, having thought about the decision for a long time I still think it is the wrong one.

I just hope the board do the right thing in appointing an experienced manager. I don't think we can risk an unproven man in our situation (which Ritchie admittedly was) Dowie or Megson for me.

Spoke to Kamara prior to the England v Sweden game

where he told me he nearly got the Barnsley job once. like he'd nearly had loads of managers jobs. and he finished at the urinal by saying that Michael Owen was going to get a bag full against the Swedes. course, I was there another 5 minutes.
