Looking for somewhere nice for a weekend away abroad with couples. Got to be good beer, plenty to see/do and decent prices. Any suggestions folks. Its going to be in November though. Thought of brugge, prague and those kind of places, anyone been or got better suggestions ???
Prague is good. I really enjoyed it when I went and you can find some decent little pubs, with good prices, good beers and good food. We went last October. Krakow is also very good.
RE: Barcelona My bro is in Barcelona with his gf now with his miss's as I type..... hes gone for a 4 day break, he wasnt very keen on the idea, but I talked to him yesterday and hes having a fab time! said the prices are quite reasonable as well......
RE: Barcelona Tried barcelona a few years ago and whilst i enjoyed it, not sure I would go back. Would defo go back to amsterdam but just fancy something different
I enjoyed Budapest, but it's not the type of place to go for a pissup. More for a relaxing weekend away. Taking in some sites etc. That reminds me, I have a story to tell from when I visited last March. Flying over Europe, I didn't really know what to expect when we landed in Ferihegy Airport. I'd seen a few weather reports that Eastern Europe was getting hit with a cold chill, a few snow showers, the odd rain storm - but culture wise, I hadn't seen much to really mull over. Landing at the airport, first signs were excellent. The facilities were immaculate. The walls were clean. The floors were gleaming and the faces seemed very friendly. There were a multitude of little stores to buy drinks, food and cigarettes if you were so inclined, which I was. We'd booked a minibus to take us from the airport to our hotel in downtown Pest, which was around a 10 minute walk from the Danube. The hotel was a Baroque themed spotless palace. It really was out of this world. And only 4 star too. We checked in, got to our rooms, unpacked and took a quick shower before setting out to enjoy our first night in the city. We didn't really have much of a clue where anything was. We just set off walking into the cool breeze and bright lights. We plodded down a side street and came to a neon sign that read 'Pilsner Urquell'...fantastic. Once inside, it read like something out of, well out of a local working mens club. The beer was around 70p a pint, the locals looked less than friendly, and the conditions were less than good. But still, the beer was cheap and the company was good. We sank a few bottles in there and headed down the street to find another bar. We found one with a bit better conditions, slighly higher priced but in exchange we got padding on our seats and a smile from the bar staff. We were all pretty spent from the plane ride, so it was off for something to eat. We weren't really in the mood to go trapsing round the city so we hit up Burger King for a Angry Whopper before heading back to the hotel for some sleep. Day 2. We awoke to the sound of sheets of rain battering against the window. Yes, this was Eastern Europe alright. After a shower, we headed down stairs for some breakfast. Not the best, the sausages seemed to have little rubber jackets on, the bacon was very crunchy and eggs seemed to have just been swimming. But still, eatable. We trudged outside, it was freezing and the rain only worsened things. After around 2 hours of walking around viewing the sights, we found a bar aptly named Valhalla, it had a viking theme to it. We sank a few a pints then headed down towards the Danube and it's many surrounding historical buildings. This is a must for anyone visiting the city, the sights are simply breathtaking. The weekend so far was going superbly. Fine ales, great views...now, for some food. We walked back across the chain bridge after perusing the Royal Palace, and found a quaint little eatery located on a cobbled side street. Perfect. Once in, we walked down some stairs into a dimly lit bar with candles situated on the tables. A really nice place. We ordered some drinks and some food. The food was chicken salad sandwiches with chips. What happened next wasn't in the script... Where we were seated, the kitchen was right behind us. I happened to look back just in time to see the chef grabbing at something on the counter. As he lifted his hands up, a massive cockroach set off running across the counter - he got it the second time. Uggh. The food was brought out, and I was reluctant to eat it. But I was still going to until... Some napkins were brought out. As I reached for one, I witnessed something move from the corner of my eye. A maggot was inching it's way across the table. Oh dear god. No way was I eating this. I told the waiter and he took it away. I told him to take the food too. We left without paying and resorted to going to Burger King. Later that night, we got absolutled plastered on Czech lager and few Hungarian ones, including an Hungarian digestif know as Unicum (yeah, what a name) - which is a must try. DAY3 This was by far the best day. The sun was shining, the streets were bustling and we found something going on in the local park. A wine drinking even was in full flow, a live band was playing and fresh food was being served nearby. I helped myself to some Spicy Sausage (oh yes) with mustard and piece of chunky bread and then went drinking some wine. I tried some Moscato which is one of my favourites, then a few more different ones which I hadn't heard of and my 1pm I was half-cut. Awesome. We headed down the street towards a little outdoor market, our lass bought a silk scarf and then we proceeded to a little Irish Bar further up the street. We played some Blackjack in here and tried a few pints of Kilkenny which is always a safe bet. After this, we went into a sports bar to watch Man Utd vs Liverpool. The weekend was mainly drinking, drinking and more drinking -with some sightseeing thrown in. And one that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The only downsides were the food - unless you can find a reputable eating place, then I'd stick to Burger King - at least any bugs will be fried to death in there Overall, a good holiday. Would be ok, but not as good as Prague et al for a lads weekend - many a striptease bar, and a few nightclubs too which we didn't go in as there were a few oldies with us. Definitely worth a visit though.
