Who was the best manager then? Obviously i'm angling for Clarke's first period - when he took over the club and there was a euphoric surge through the club/ community. Unbelievable days back then - i can well recall abumper crowd at Worsbrough Bridge pre-season as he was present. He made the club more professional etc, and attendances rose unbelievably - well above what Iley would have pulled in for sure.

Then Clarkie announced he was off to Leeds - his last game was a night game at Brentford which we drew 1-1 - and that's when we received the nes. Step forward Norman Hunter who certainly got the team playing with more postiveness. And who could forget our first seaon in the Second Division? Quarter finals of the League Cup,FA Cup fifth round, exciting, attacking football.

These were certainly exciting times being a Barnsley supporter.

For what it's worth..... personally i first thought i'd plunge for Clarke because of the pure excitement and buzz that followed his appointment. But on reflection i reckon Hunter took us into Division Two very well indeed - with good Cup runs to boot!! (Y) (raiseaglass)

Clarke for me. Team playes some really good football, I'll always remember the Clarke Era.
The game at west ham united away when we won 5-2 was fantastic, got in on video somewhere, and the commentary was legendary!!

Steve Lowndes, Agnew, Futcher and Gwyn Thomas was my hero's. Was it Clarke who signed McGugan too from Celtic?

The Commentor on that game at West Ham was gutted when we pulled back, I think he called Thomas Smith or summat at one point!!

    Clarke

Using the old division 1 to 4 terminology, pre-Clarke, we were a 4th division club, flirting with the 3rd division now and again.

Post Clarke, we were an established 2nd division club, flirting with the 1st division (one memorable season and a play off defeat).

Allan Clarke was responsible for a step change in expectation, and achievement, at Oakwell.

Clarke was the best judge of players to sign

But once Clarke had assembled the team Hunter got them playing the better football

its quite easy choice though - we were in Division 4 and going nowhere when Clarke was appointed.

suddenly we were averaging gates of over 10000 and in the promotion positions with a team that Clarke built

I remember a then 4th division record attendence of over 21000 when we clinched promotion against Grimsby (and I must admit to my one invading the pitch adventure :) )

Clarke then rebuilt the side -signing the likes of Glavin Parker Aylott etc a side that Hunter took on and improved.

but if picking the best manager it has to be clarke

    Hunter

Clarke unquestionably transformed the club but under Hunter we played the better football IMHO.

When i posted the thread i must admit i was thinking of the comparison of Clarke (1978 - 1980) and Hunter (1980 - mid 83/84). mind you, it's good to see a few of you young un's enjoyed his second period. Wasn't a patch on his first experience, mind (chinny)

I used to watch them train when Clarke was there and he took no **** from the players, him and Winstanley definately got them to play attractive football.
Clive Baker too came down to my local park (At Broomhill nr Wombwell) one sunday and coached us, I enjoyed that.

    Brilliant football

But Alan Clarke was a really good bloke - I worked at the club when he was in charge & he was lovely to everyone.

    eh ?

... we were in the third when Clarke left... Hunter was in charge when we were promoted to Div 2.

for me. He signed the necessary players to get us out of the Third Division McHale and Barraclough. His football was also more attack minded than Clarkies'
