I was on Wikipedia last night & was looking where ex-players ended up & found myself on Clint’s page. I knew he played for us (obviously) & had a spell at Scarborough but blimey what a career. He was one of my childhood heroes but I had no idea he was still playing non-league over here after I left school. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clint_Marcelle Spells at Armthorpe Welfare, Hucknall Town, Gainsborough etc. I’m guessing he just liked living over here & didn’t want to go back to Trinidad as I can’t imagine the money was any good at some of them teams. He must have just loved the game to still be turning out for Armthorpe at 38.
When I searched for him on Google I found a post on a Donny forum talking about playing 5 a side against him at Donny dome whilst he was in the prem with us. I also heard Darren Sheridan on under the cosh talking about how him & his brother were 5 a side league champions in Manchester whilst he was playing in the premier league playing for us. It seems crazy now. It’d be all over social media. Can you imagine Luca Connell & Herbie Kane playing in a 5 a side league mid-season? The idea of it is just ridiculous.
I dont know of many recently. But quite a few from yesteryear played non league. And pretty sure Chris Waddle played regularly for a sheffield sunday league side. And sure (but not with absolute certainty) I played against Stu Barrowclough in a sunday league game.
Heard some properly brilliant stories about Clint from his time with us. A bit of a ladies' man (apparently) to put it mildly!
He's the only man I've ever kissed. I met him in the lift in the east stand after THAT Bradford game. Couldn't resist it.
Mike Williamson and John Bostock still play non league, Julio Arca played non league at age 32/33 straight after Middlesbrough, he had a proper cult following too!
I pretty sure i played against Marco Gabbiadini a few times in the York Saturday league about 15 years ago. Kept a clean sheet
Leroy lita is still going strong. Former Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Middlesbrough forward Leroy Lita has joined non-league outfit Barwell – the 24th club of his career.
I loved Clint. I knew we were onto something when he scored in the opening game away at WBA. His brace at Man City was sublime. He will always be remembered fondly as far as I'm concerned. By the way, he was that quick, he used to pass the ball to himself....
Played with Les Lea for a couple of seasons in the Barnsley Sunday Leagues. He was still the best player on the pitch even in his 40s. He packed in after some thug in Barugh Greens team did a number on him and broke his nose.
