Just looking through some old programmes and found a scrapbook of newspaper articles i used to keep, I found a piece on us being close to signing him in 1991. Can anyone remember this, its certainly slipped my mind over these years.
If my memory is right, I think they wanted Shaw Carpets to pay his wages through some sort of sponsorship deal. But I think his wage demands was too high:redface:
Keith Birkinshaw Remember him being offered the manager's job around the same time, maybe a bit earlier. At the time it would have beena huge coup for us, as he's been reasonably successful at Spurs.. Think we were just hoping a Barnsley lad would have a stab at it. I remember the headlines on the Star plaquards. "Birkinshaw decision for Barnsley" . Obviously his decision was "no".
Well i think i can quosh this one. I remember ringing into skysports when Clive was on with Rob Mcafferey after we'd just beaten tranmere or sumdi live on sky. Hristov had scored that night also. I asked Clive if there was any truth in this rumour and he catergorically said that he'd looked to play for many clubs but could assure me that Barnsley was never going to be one of them and laughed. He could have been lying on live telly though.......
