According to this chap on twitter, a respected member of the press association. Will sign 3-year deal Fri, subject to medical. Fee IRO £500K #barnsleyfc #bhafc
Shafted again! What's the point of us signing players on any sort of contract at all ? It makes no difference as we get peanuts regardless.
500k plus we're not paying him that in wages for 12 months. Shafted? Not in my opinion. Am I happy with the fee? No. I think a million would have been more palatable. But I'm used to it. Just hope that once we've cleared the decks that Danny is backed to the hilt in his attempts to recruit lads 'he' wants.
Exactly what I am saying though Whitey. We're all used to seeing our top players go for next to nothing. Other clubs seem to sell unproven or 1 season wonders for mega bucks and as soon as soon as we see a few hundred grand waved at us we snatch it! 1 mil would have been palatable but that's only because we support barnsley. Other clubs would get more.
Looks like ulloa is leaving Brighton for Leicester. O'Grady seems a decent replacement as he finished the top scorer of the 2 last season (in a poor relegated team playing 1 up front and sometimes none up front!) only difference is Brighton are expecting 7 million unlike us....
Rotherham turn £500'000 for fleckington who scored 14 goals in divison one we take 500'00 for o'grady who scored 15 goals in a bad side in the championship sumart wrong with our g.o.e brain dead comes to mind
Bum-raped again. Still, with the fee plus wages saved, it's the thick end of a million quid. Trust Danny to invest it wisely. I can think of nobody else I'd sooner ask to get three or four decent players with the proceeds. I feel pretty sure he'll deliver. Plus, I'd have sooner a) kept him at massive expense or b) given him away than let him go to Dem Blades. Chin up! It ain't all bad!
Brighton will be disappointed when they find out how slow COG is. He might possibly have done some sort of job at L1 level, but on the whole, I'm enthused that we now have to ditch our one-trick pony tactic of just hoofing it up to him. This is going well - only Dr Cranie and One Foot to go now! COYR!!!
In the thread the other day it was argued that we would have to pay the wages of a player when we sold them if they haven't asked for a transfer. We haven't heard of Chris O'Grady asking for a transfer. Indeed, why would he when he knew Barnsley were accepting bids and if he didn't ask for a transfer he'd get an extra years wages. In another thread it was claimed O'Grady was on about 8 grand a week. So we'll owe him about 400K. And make just 100 grand from the deal.
Thats the problem, Whitey, your last sentence, i dont think he will be backed to the hilt and we will end up signing non desript players:-(
I saw that in the thread and I can't see it be true - even considering how daft modern football is. O'Grady's contract hasn't been terminated. It's been purchased and taken over by another company. He hasn't suffered a loss so should not be compensated by BFC. In fact he will now be much better off as he will have been offered a pay rise by Brighton. The only time the selling/releasing club would have to pay is if the player is moving against his wishes to a lower paid contract. Also, you never hear a manager say "well we got a good fee for him but we won't come out with much by the time we've paid his contract up". I don't think I've ever heard anyone in football say anything remotely like that.
Why is this a joke? - we paid c£300k for him, and potentially sell him for c£500k. In financial terms, that's good business. If and/or when he does go, good luck to him - an honest grafter who always gives 100%.
It's a poor deal 15 goals in a relegated side. When a team like Peterborough sell a player and they've sold much less effective ones than O'Grady they get much better fees due to having a defined transfer policy.
you are correct Conan it only applies if a player is sold without asking for a transfer where he will earn less than he is presently being paid, and then only for the remaining time on their contract with the selling club. other clubs hold out for more money as they have owners actively involved in the club and with plenty of money eg Darragh MacAnthony at Peterborough they don't NEED to sell there players so they are always in a strong negotiating position, we have obviously had to trim the wages for SCMP I agree with others that surely the amount of players we've released should have covered that so I can only imagine that we need to sell COG now to get something in for transfer fees. I'll never have a bad word to say about Patrick cos he saved us and he keeps the club going but obviously hes never going to be too involved and I cant see him ploughing anymore of his own money in for signings so we have to hope for a bit of a cup run I guess. I'm still very positive we'll do well this season though it is probably going to take till end of the transfer window as always to get the players in that will complete the tem which isn't ideal but as long as we finish stronger than we start we should be up and around the play offs. like others have said though we need to be patient with the younger players and the team in general and see if danny can bring a team together for us again playing decent football
500k = shafted. 52 league games = 21 goals in a struggling side. We bought him in the region of 400k when he had a record of 9 goals in 39 games in a promoted side.
