Did anyone used to do it as kids? Seemed to be quite popular years ago, despite it being illegal. Does it even go on today?
In the 50-60s most lads would have had a go at collecting them, and soon get bored. It was a fairly common hobby. Eggs would get swapped in School playgrounds and even primary Schools would have a Nature Corner with birds eggs, bird wings, owl pellets, bats, snake skins, frog spawn, fish, frogs and newts from local ponds, etc. The children who had lived abroad would come back with bits and pieces of dead animals. It was a part of our education. We spent a lot more of our time in the outdoors than kids do today. Egg collecting rarely happens today because it is illegal and a good thing too. But you do get the odd Court case. Who needs birds eggs when you can go to Tesco and get chocolate eggs.
It was normal when we were young. Today it is not acceptable. Wild life is under severe pressure. Every egg taken kills the youngster inside it.
