    DNA samples

Should be collected at Birth, from everybody alive in this country, and from all immigrants. Fact. No right minded person would think otherwise.

    RE: For what reason?

For possible use in treating future illnesses.

what makes you think we will?

We are basing predictions on the current older generation - who where the healthiest generation ever (so we are told) having a good diet through the war.

The younger generations are more stressed, work longer, do less excersise, eat crap, drink too much (24/7) and are over weight -

what makes us think we will live longer?

    Because

I think (and I am entitled to my opinion)that it would be the single biggest deterrent to the potential criminal going about his business without fear of capture. As DNA sampling and collection procedures become increasingly sophisticated, as they will, instead of the plod running around like headless chickens saying we've got a DNA sample now all we need is a suspect to tie it to, how much simpler to run it through a machine and say it's one of these half a dozen - reel em in and check their alibis. In the past the routine collection of fingerprints from suspects was not considered a massive infringement of civil liberties. I'm sick of the PC lot rambling on about personal freedom when it's at the expense of a relatively cheap, relatively easy way to help fight crime. Not an absolute solution, just a massively useful way of using relatively new technologies to redress the balance in favour of those looking to solve crime. And I am sure that there would be a myriad other uses over time - DNA matching to help find suitable organ donors springs to mind.

    RE: Because

Changes the relationship twixt state and individual. Do that and the inference is that we all belong to the state. Voluntary donation of DNA material is a different matter.

It's always been a good idea since the technology became available........

......but, even if you could get it by the fluffies, still prohibitively expensive.

I couldn't be more opposed to that idea

If I took a PhD in Opposition Studies at the Opposition Faculty of Opposition College at Opposition University in Oppositionsville, Oppositionshire.

Where's Polly Toynbee when you need her ?????

    She'll be out

sharpenning up her self righteousness. Surely nobody believes they are THAT right all the time. Did you read her review of The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe the other day. I almost turned religious out of sympathy.

    Hehe

No, I try and avoid all Toynbee related stuff. I watch her on Question Time though when I feel like shouting at the telly a lot.

What was her take on Lion/wardrobe thing ??

Full of religious iconography, should be banned, good job children don't understand that Aslam is the representation of Jesus, and that the baddie child is the devil in disguise and he gets his cummuppance like all baddies do, in the USA various religions are sending out study texts to schools so that they can indoctrinate the poor wee kiddies etc etc etbleedingcetera. Just another well balanced newspaper article really.

PS I think she's an aetheist. Just a guess.

PPS She quite liked the film.

    RE: Because

Typical authoritarian. What right does anyone have to take anything from anyone yet to be born or otherwise on the basis that they MIGHT commit a crime in the future?

    It aint very expensive

The rate of price reduction in DNA work is massive.

    Its just a stupid idea.
Because it appears a perfect system, it still open to human error and fiddling.
