Sky are doing a combined Man Utd treble winning team from 99 with City team this year. What’s your combined XI with the 2016 play off squad and now
Adam Davies Jordan Williams Alfie Mawson Mads Andersen Nicky Cadden Connor Hourihane Josh Brownhill Herbie Kane Adam Hammill Ashley Fletcher Sam Winnall Playing a dodgy formation to fit the front three in really.
It's difficult given the different formations but I have to say, much as I appreciate the current team, there are very few that would get near the 2016 team. That team was majestic second half of the season. If we'd had Hammill and Winnall in our team this season we'd already have been promoted in the top two.
I think it’d pretty much be the 2016 team bar the full backs where Scowen & George Williams played due to injuries. It’s hard to judge as I can’t get out of my head how well the majority of the 2016 side did since where as you don’t have that luxury with the current side. Hard to pick Mads over Roberts when Roberts has been a consistent championship performer for 7 years. Brownhill just had several seasons playing in the premier league so I can’t really pick Connell or Kane over him.
I bet if you’d told people at the start of the season that we’d have a midfielder with 10 goals and 9 assists this season, most would expect him to make it into peoples combined teams with the 2016 team to play alongside Hourihane.
Hard to judge as they played completely different formations. Davies J Williams Andersen Mawson Cadden Phillips Hourihane Connell Hammill Winnall Fletcher
Looking back it shows what an utter fraud Johnson was to lose 8 on the bounce with that squad. We should have pissed the league.
Collins J Williams Andersen Mawson Cadden Hourihane Connell Phillips or Kane.. cant decide there. Winnall Cole (on the right) Hammill (cutting in off the left, of course). Subs/Honourable Mentions: Davies (distribution let him down) Roberts Kitching Scowen (brilliant but Connell does his role better) Marley Watkins Aidy White - such a shame injuries plagued him Ivan Toney.. always knew he was a £100,000,000 player, never a shadow of doubt....
It just shows how good the clubs recruitment has been down the years. It's shame we had all the right players but not necessarily in the right order.
Basically, turn the 2016 into 5-3-2 and replace George Williams, Scowen, Hammill and Isgrove with Jordan Williams, Andersen, Cadden and Connell
Well he didn’t really lose 8 with that squad, did he, as Brownhill and Hammill weren’t part of the team then. Bringing Hammill in gave the team a better balance and allowed Hourihane to do the role that Johnson and Wright had been coaching into him. By this time Roberts had settled into his first season as a pro and had developed an understanding with Mawson, making us more solid at the back. When we only had the one wide player he was having to shove square pegs into round holes. Once he got the balanced team, had retrained Hourihane and added Brownhill he had taken us on a 6 game winning streak, to a cup final and set us on course for promotion. Hecky came in and, as everyone said, nothing changed in training (except they probably had less diagrams up on the wall!) and he was lucky enough to only have one injury problem, necessitating Williams to switch to LB and Scowen to drop to RB and the team continued on the trajectory Johnson had set and we steamrollered to promotion. So if we blame him for the ***** start to the season, the losing streak and us getting piss wet through watching us lose to a team of part-timers, we then have to credit him for what the team turned in to, cos the second half of that season was a great time to be a Reds fan
Hi Lee Looking at that squad he could have played me and thee in place of Hammill and Brownhill and he still shouldn't have lost 8 games on the spin. He played Winnall on the right wing ffs.
We lost Bree & White to injury & Kevin Long went back to Burnley so Hecky had a 75% new back 4 to work with. 2 of them playing out of position. He also lost Marley Watkins to injury for most of the run in. I think however anyone tries to dress it up Lee Johnson did a terrible job. He used to sit in press conferences giving us long ramblings about how Hourihane couldn’t play in a two when he’d already proven he could when he had through necessity. The amount of times we dominated possession at home but played at such a slow pace that we could never break teams down was ridiculous. Jordan Clark bagging a late winner for Shrewsbury was the best example of this where we were countered high up the pitch & no one took a man down for a booking & loads of players were out of position. This happened loads. I don’t think it was a player issue. As a manager even if your players were crap technically you have to give them a shape off the ball & he didn’t. I wasn’t his biggest fan.
