Last night I downloaded updates for McAfee anti-virus and firewall.
After installing, when the Pc rebooted it hung on starting Windows (98 incidentally), couldn't even get it to start in safe mode so I resorted to reinstalling windows and that sorted out that problem.
However, I can't get onto internet (I'm at work now before anyone says owt) - I'm on Blueyonder broadband so should be an "always on" connection. I just get the usual error screen of server not available.
Contacted Blueyonder last night and they tried various things, basically from a dos command screen I could "ping" an IP address so there is a connection there.
They gave me number for Microsoft support and said to tell them that I can "ping an IP address but I can't connect to DNS" they said that MS would know what to do from that to reset my settings for the DNS.
Called the number last night for MS and, whilst I got through, its only a "games support helpline" after 6pm. So need to call between 8 and 6, can't at the moment as I'm at work - just wondered if anyone on here had any idea how to correct this DNS thing just in case I'm not home in time tonight to call them.

    ta!

Did Blueyonder send you drivers/software for your modem that you've forgotten to reinstall?

I know from what you've said in the past that you think because you pay for McAfee that it is better than the free versions available on the web like AVG ani-virus, but that is simply not the case. I've heard many people complain of problems when using McAfee, but none from those that use AVG. When you get everything sorted I'd suggest changing your anti-virus software so such problems don't happn again.

    Easy ...

You need to attach your SVG cable to your AX-12 connector on the motherboard.
Then fit a 256 mega twit flash device to the QIM remote sensor.

You will need to conduct a level 5 diagnostic test.
Make sure the warp core is off line first.

    No need to thank me.

Tried reinstalling the blueyonder software - got 1 cd.

p.s. can't deny it's a damned good firewall and anti-virus system - can't get online I'm not likely to download any viruses!

Sounds like it might be your ballcock.

Did you make sure the heads are okay?
You might need one of those cleaning tapes.

It might even be the wheel bearings that have gone.
Sounds like your brake discs are shot too.

You may just need a new SIM card.

I'd take the plunge and install XP - cheap to buy as an OEM or ahem "aquire". I have never had to re-install XP, you can roll back if you have problems with recent updates using system restore. I struggle to get on Blueyonder sometimes, particularly at night. My modem sits their bleeping one or two lights at me for hours on end. I don't rate their service at all. Anyway Windows 98 is seven years old now and a bit long in the tooth.

Go & buy Windows XP, not a copy, because copies can't download updates and critical security patches. It's not expensive; however, if you're using a 7 year old operating system then I'm guessing your PC is quite old too, so yuo need to check it can take XP.

You'll not have any problems with BY on XP.

Not going to bother upgrading to XP - I've had the PC over 5 years so ready for a new one soon, being only 700MHz (I say only but at the time this was some going!) I'm not sure how it would handle XP anyway.
No doubt if I call Microsoft they'll try to send me down the line of buying XP.
I've got a couple of things to try tonight having trawled though the interweb.

do this command from a command window (start, run ,command) and tell me what it chucks back at you

    ipconfig /all

Look for the DNS server IP addresses and tell me what they are

Also how is your modem connected to you PC? Through the network socket or USB?

NO! Fix the problem! Installing a new OS wont help you.

If you've done a clean install of Win98, then pop the BY CD in, and load everything off that, and follow the instructions. If it still fails, ring the BY Help Desk (150 from a BY Phone). I suspect something needs manually configuring, which they should be able to tell you what.

It sounds like the firewall updates have cocked your internet connections up. I had a similar problem to this on 98 when I uninstalled my fire wall. Can you get into task manager to stop the fire wall starting?

That's what I was thinking. Why install a whole new OS, the rest appears ok, it's just an issue with t'internet, I've got instructions for checking the TCP/IP settings which I suspect may solve it.
The Blueyonder software should be untouched - I've reinstalled Windows once or twice on the machine (used to have to do it regularly on my old machine running 95) and usually applications work fine without reinstalling.

So a new OS? I've got some walnuts here as well - should I buy a sledgehammer to crack them open?

ipconfig /all - I'm at work at the moment so can't.....did this last night for the Blueyonder support guy, from his reaction I guess it was ok

Look for the DNS server IP addresses and tell me what they are - where do I find that and what should they be?

Also how is your modem connected to you PC? Through the network socket or USB? - it's USB, checked modem in the system menu and it was showing as connected ok, also did a ping to an ip address in command window and that worked ok

It doesn't even think the firewall is running (well from the control panel for it), that was my thought that the firewall was blocking everything.
I'll double check task manager tonight to see if that says it's running.
