I have a large music collection built up into a single file on my hard drive. I also have a 100Gb external storage device. Is there any software that can back up this file onto my external drive, and any time there is modifications to said file, it will be reflected on the external drive? Whether I add or delete songs from the main file? Thank you.
errrr there is, off top of mi head i cant think of the bloody way to do it though. if you put it all on your external hard drive and then have a shortcut on your desktop linking to the external hard drive, that should work.. surely
Freefile Sync http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/ It's pretty simple but I don't think it works in the background. You could run it once a week. Would also recommend having an extra backup drive if you can afford it.
Yes If you are on a PC you can use synctoy its free from microsoft and has a couple of different ways it can run but the mode you would want is echo this means anything you change on the main drive will be also done on the backup drive - this means if you delete a song it will be deleted from the backup - is that what you want - there is an alternative mode which will add files to the back up but never delete them it doesnt run in the background though you would need to run it - maybe once a week or if you added some new songs -its dead easy though once its setup
That isn't what I need mate. If the hard drive failed I would lose all my music - it's a backup I need. That sounds good mate. Why would you recommend a backup backup though? Ah this is perfect mate, shame it's not auto, but like you say I could run it everytime I make a modification to the parent file. Cheers all for your input.
I have two, a weekly and a monthly. Some hard drives will give up the ghost when you least expect it, particularly small enclosed hard drives which can overheat if they are left on permanently.
I think for my usage a single backup is fine. It's really unbelievably bad luck if both the primary and the backup goes at the same time. If it works for you mate then great stuff, but for what I do I think it would be pointless.
I'll have a look later when I get home at your link bud. Won't let me view it at work with our filters.
I got SyncToy and it looks like it works an absolute treat! Will just need to remember to run it once in a while. Thank you all for your suggestions!
You can set a schedule for it to run - if you click on the help tab at the top it tells you how to do it
