My PC has recently started shutting itself down. I've deleted anything I no longer use to free up memory space but still the problem exists - and the comp has pleny of spare memory left.

It commonly happens when trying to perform a systems scan and when trying to start a new game on FM.

Anybody any ideas what is causing this and how it can be fixed?

    Sounds thermal at first guess.
Assuming it isn't a laptop, take the side off and hoover any dust out of the fans and suchlike.
If this doesn't fix it, run it with the side off to improve ventilation and keep it away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
If you still have no luck it requires further diagnosis.

It is unlikely to be anything at the front

Processor heatsink is most likely culprit, then power supply fan then north bridge heatsink/fan (if fitted).

RE: It is unlikely to be anything at the front

There is some kind of air intake and fan at the front, halfway down the tower (just under disk drive).

The sides appear to be rivetted to the front, which is proving somewhat problematic!

    Turn the machine around.
As you look at the back plate there will be 2 screws holding each side on.
Remove the screws from the right hand side as you look from behind, slide the panel towards you then remove outwards.
