    I've tried it with Microsoft works and it doesn't work! nt

    IIRC they are documents created in Microsoft Works. So M$ Works is what you need. M$ Office will not open them which is a pain in the arse.
    However, I think OpenOffice.org handles them so I'd try that if I were you.

    Must be incompatable with the earlier version of Works I have

    Nothing like backwards compatibility is there!
