I have not been able to get windows updates for a while as the security update for IE9 for Windows Vista always fails to install and shows an error code KB2792100. Because of this I cannot get any other updates either. I have tried a system restore but that did not work. Does anybody know how to get it to install and then be able to get further updates? Thanks

Anything from MS that starts with KB is a Knowledge Base article. Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2792100 and download the right one for your version of Windows...

Try to run it manually once it has downloaded.

A failed update like this usually means there is an underlying problem with the Windows install (corrupt file or permissions issue)

I've just been upgraded to Windows 7 at work and I've got to say I am reasonably impressed by it. It's probably the best O/S since XP.

We are still XP at work and on my old Dell D600 laptop at home, but I know a few people with Win7 (including the wife and son) and it looks ok to me.

Vista was a complete bag of sh*t.

I had the misfortune to be upgraded from XP to Vista and I agree it was a terrible O/S in fact it was so bad I believe it was done on purpose.

Yes, agree with all of the above.

Windows XP and 7 are very good.

Avoid Windows 8 like the plague!

I have XP so don't know anything about Vista, but do you have a problem with your Windows Firewall, does it say it is switched off? (Control Panel/Security Centre or Windows Firewall)
Also, if you have any anti virus/spyware progs, are you able to update their latest downloads or are you given error messages preventing you from getting them?
Yours may be a completely different setup from mine but check what I have said.

I'm no expert but have tried googling the error code.

I had that problem with one particular update.
It appeared that the update wasn't working becuase the computer just seemed to be hanging up when I rebooted.
When I googled it, I found that the update took about 35 minutes of inactivity before it would load.
I did a system restore to quite a few months earlier and then when the updates came along, clicked the update icon and just left it for what seemed like hours before it all reloaded and was back to normal. Don't know if its the same problem but that worked for me. Been updating OK and a lot more quickly since then.
