That's our first ever medal on snow Tomi. EVER! We've won plenty on ice, but never on snow. Well, we got a bronze medal in the men's slalom in Salt Lake City, but Alan Baxter was banned for taking drugs. He had a sniffle and bought a Vicks inhaler from the local chemist. He knew they were fine and had nothing in them on the banned list because he used them in Scotland. Trouble is, in the USA they used a different recipe and had the banned methamphetamine in them. The international ski federation accepted his explanation, the drug itself had no significant stimulant properties (it was an inactive levorotary isomer of methamphetamine, whatever that is) but Alan still lost the medal. So, this was a bit of a big deal for us.
Ah, I certainly didn't know that. I can see why this is kind of a big deal then. I haven't heard of people dividing the events in two "categories" (ice/snow) but it makes sense. Congratulations on your first ever Snow Medal! Yeah, I vaguely remember that Alain Baxter incident, it kind of sucks to lose the medal for something that probably didn't even help him in the performance... What other potential medal candidates you've got in these games? As Finns seem to be absolutely crap in men's cross-country skiing these days, I hope that this Scottish guy that I read about the other day does well!
A couple of lasses in the women's skeleton, an event we've got a very good record in are probably our best shot. Men's four-man bobsleigh. Curling teams are alright. A couple of freestyle skiers and a short track speed skater. But these are events where we're not crap, where we will probably finish in the top 10, rather than where we are looking to win. Well, they'll try to win, but they're far from favourites. It's hope rather than expectation.
Yes first on snow. I was proper made up for her. If this had been in the olympics years ago she would have won a lot more than bronze in the past. Im a snowboarder so its been great finally seeing this in the olympics. Really enjoyed watching it yesterday and the girls did us proud today. It takes serious guts to throw some of the tricks they do as one bad move and its often a trip to the hospital. One had a bad fall today and it smashed the back of her helmet apart - amazed she walked away conscious to be honest. Hope no ill after effects a la shumey.
