    Our cricket club bar wants to get a card machine so guests can pay by card instead of cash. We're thinking of one of these:-

    Has anyone used one, and do they work ok? We'll lose income if we don't do something, as hardly anyone uses cash these days.

    My local uses them

    They work. And they charge a percentage of each transaction. Rather than a flat fee per transaction.

    Which obviously means no contract length, and it matters not if you pay for 10 pints individually or 10 in one go.

    From my bank statements, I can see Cawthorne CC use Zettle. Maybe worth looking into how they get on? :)

    As long as you have mobile signal or wifi you're away. Just need to decide if you absorb the fee or put the prices up

    I looked into them a few years ago. Setting up a trader acct with Barclaycard etc is expensive but cheaper to use per transaction. So for a high volume business they’re cheaper.

    The simpler app based devices have low setup costs but higher transaction costs, for a small volume business they’re perfect.

    I was meaning from a "sellers" perspective. I used to work for a company who supplied stuff like that. And knowing that was per transaction, I offered my local to pay a few pints up front (or tab until end of night) so he got one charge, instead of per transaction.

    I didnt realise until he said he used these SUMUP machines and it made no difference.

    So it does have some advantages.

    Still, 10 in one go, challenge is set mate

    Yep, a bank trader machine would be prohibitively expensive, as we're closed for 6 months of every year. I think we'll end up with Sumup or Zettle.

    We use Zettle, but to be fair it's mostly because I like the EPOS bit and it integrates nicely with other stuff. I'm definitely past the point when I should have moved on to a proper solution, but that's a big old change and I'm loath to drop something that just works!

    Anyway I don't have a problem with it at all, but I'd definitely recommend a tablet with a sim card, or use a phone. I've looked at a lot of these over the past few years, so feel free to pm me if you've got any specific questions.

    (and yes, everybody should take card payments. Not sure if I've posted the figures on here before, but we're down to about 2.5% cash payments now, and I can't see it bouncing back to the 30 or so it was before lockdown).

    I will genuinely have to go to the bank before the first home game as parking and a drink at the match are 2 of only a few times I need cash nowadays.

    I use iZettle, on an app from phone, lots of people speak highly of sum up too.
    Like others said if you use regular get a monthly fee one, if occasional % of transaction.

    My wife is a mobile hairdresser and uses SumUp.

    I think it charges her 1.69%, so just under 2p for every £1.

    She tethers to her phone when she is at a customers house or it uses wifi if she is at home.

    If anyone needs a receipt, she can email them an invoice, although no-one ever asks for one.

    When she first got it she was a little skeptical about it but with covid obviously after the opening of the first lockdown people didn't want to use cash and now most of her clients pay her through it.

    There is a slight delay for it to appear in your bank, a day or so I think, but you can see what your takings are straight away on the app and it notes which transactions have been paid and which are still pending.

    R lass has just got one for the same reason.

    Cost £30 to buy (I think) and its 2p per transaction.

    I'll find out later what it's called.

    Our cricket club have had sumup since we came out of the first lock down
    seems to work fine
    only thing as a customer you cant read the screen too well
    so are you paying £3.20 a pint or a typo and its £320

    you just send a link to smart phone for payment.

    cheaper. Easier and pay per transaction.

    can point you in right direction for that if it’s any good for you?
